when you want to improve your skills in all other aspects : yes

a game isn´t only made by code. it also needs graphics with all its aspects of sprites/fx/backgrounds, sound fx, music, leveldesign, gameidea and gamebalance, storyline and finally a working result, which is the hardest piece ...

i have no clue how to write even a single codeline. but that hasn´t stopped me from making lots of games. on the other hand: i am just a little poor hobbygamedeveloper

I would think that creating mod for an existing game would better showcase your design skills.
