Well I just wanted to take a 15 minute break to think about a theoretical topic, Im sure thats been discussed before. I was wonder what the engine you most enjoy playing in for an RPG / RTS given no limits on the programmer? RTS i like it simple and top down... nothing fancy while RPGs im a little more flexible with... My favortie engine was Ultima Online for its simplicity and usefullness. And yes I did kick a 3 year UO addiction *pat on back* which was probably just as hard as quitting smoking jk. Diablo is very nice and as far a 3d goes the only one I like is darkstone - for some reason I think Tombraider was the downfall of all qualtiy video games currupting everything into shitty 3d. What type of games did you all want to make for the poll? Im trying out a RPG/ RTS . Think real time Hero of might and magic real time combat system with a twist. Lep
as far as rts goes i like the look of starcraft with the interface of c&c
as far as rpgs go i like the top down iso view simple becuause its alot easier to manage the game in that view then when your in a 3d view

rts C&C.
RPG be it online or single player - UO.

I''m trying my hand at the latter style.

My futile attemps
I never played UO.. I was not going to pay 50 $$ for a game that required me to pay more if I wanted to play, besides I never have more than 1 hour every two or three days to play on the computer.. how is it? is there any game that uses a very similar interface? I would really like to look at it.
I liked a lot the interface of PlanScape: Torment, and for RTS.. hmmm.. I don''t like RTS THAT much, but I like simple interfaces. I would say Ages of Empires.
I think 3D is the only way to go for the future, but right now there are very few games that are 3D and are good. I am awaiting for Fallout 3.. *drool*

My favorite RTS is defeanately Age of Empires 2, the game has the best graphics and best multiplayer game play. For TBS games the best user interface is defeanately Age of Wonders (which anyone who has seen my game knows I like it, hehe). As for RPG''s, I dont play them.

Possibility
I played and still play sometimes paper RPG, and table top wargame, so my expactations from computers have always been vey high for those two genres ...

I don''t like the RTS on computers, yet, they get some parts of the pictures right, but never seem to make it. Homeworld is a little jewel in this pool of shit. Excellent background and design, good gameplay, somewhat short. Ground Control seem like the beginning of what I always expected RTS to be, but I don''t have the full game yet.

For RPGs... I loved everything Ultima until they decided to go online. The rule systems are all antediluvian (D&D is from 1974 and most RPG still seem to stick to this kind of rules )
But the level of the plots seem to be getting deeper and deeper. Maybe one day as good as paper RPG ? Though I don''t believe this can happen. People playing CRPG would have to understand what RPGs are first of all ...

Engine doesn''t matter. Heck I love ADOM, and it''s a text Roguelike ! 3D is used as eye candy so far. Hopefully it will be USED properly in the future.

Drooling for Tribes 2, Halo, and why not a sequel to Daggerfall ?

youpla :-P

Just give me simple.

Warcraft 2, BG/Torment, you know..
some option/status bars along the
side with all your options layed
out.. nothing fancy and complicated,
those just take away from the gameplay
and responsiveness. And quick-keys
always help

And on a side note, 3D RPG''s are BAD!

well i dont think 3d rpgs are bad but the thing that makes them bad is how developers give them god awful views i dont want fiftythousand camera choices when im trying to kill an orc its to confusing and hard to play they should keep it simple with like 3 choices and people should just except that
I'm a big fan of the UO engine and the Diablo II engine. My perfect engine would likely be a combination of those two. I like the camera angle in Diablo as well as the parallax scrolling and lighting; but I enjoy the overall feel of UO, like having the whole screen as play area with arrangeable gumps for the interface.
As far as RTS games, I really like the interface of Blizzard games. Of course, I haven't played C&C or Age of Empires, so I may be missing out on the good stuff.

I like the Age of Empires 2 interface for RTS. Another RTS with a good interface was KKND. Starcraft annoyed me because you could only queue up five units in a building. RTS interface are all about learning the hot keys...

I dont play RPGs much, so I can''t give an opinion on that Diablo 2 looks pretty cool though.
