my friends planned for a mutiplayer game part for first time. None of them has any LAN cards except modems. So is itpossible to make a network using modems only? Somebody said that you will need a hub...? Please give advice.

Not unless you have a phone line for each person there. Modems dont quite work the same way as network cards do.

The hub is for the network cards, they connect to the hub using Cat-5 patch cables, basically like a phone line but instead of 4 wires they have 8 and instead of rj-11 jacks they have rj-45.

Also whats the point of a LAN party if youre going to be using modems?

Who uses modems?
Good God man, just have them go buy some NIC''s. A basic network card is anywhere between 5 - 20 dollars. Just go grab one, it''ll make things much easier for you.
i thought that as modem is a communication device we could use it for networking. Also windows has option of direct cable network using com ports?

...yes, hyperterminal, but you will likely be only able to connect two computers to each other (null modem cable).

All this for the price of:
1) crap load of time setting it up
2) crap load of money getting a null modem cable (for the same price a net card + cat5 cable).
3) slow performance.

Seriousely, get a net card, and at least a cross-over patch cable to connect 2 systems (without a hub).
