It looks to me from toying with the game a little that the engine was pretty much designed for the kind of use that it is used for but not much else, such as interior enviornments, it doesn''t seem that it would have a great detail depth in things like that but...

The engine they used is a non-genre specific graphics engine. It''s been used on many, many games ranging from this game, sports games, sims, and even the new Sonic the Hedgehog game coming out.

Im not just interested in your opinion, I need expert advice boys!

What is the point of asking people what THEY would make and then telling them to shut up when they tell you. Yes, their answers may be stupid but that is because the question invites such answers.

It seems to me that you are not getting the answers you want because you didn't actually ask the question you want answered. Are you perhaps interested in knowing where people think the GTA genre will go? Maybe you want to know what games would be possible with that engine, or maybe you really do just want to know what THEY would do with the engine (in which case you got the answer and you should just accept it).

When trying to gather information asking the right question is crucial.

I would have thought that it would depend on how much of the code you would want to use. They may have used a rendering engine but I guarantee that the engine didn''t have the crazy car physics they had in GTA3. So, you could just use the graphics engine but what is the point? The graphics weren''t that good, but it did run smoothly. That would be because of the limitations they self imposed upon themselves after testing for texture sizes, special effects, texture colour depth and polygon limits. So the real question should be which parts of the engine would you use and for what purpose?
You''re gonna get a lot of different answers because you didn''t say what GTA engine you''re talking about. The original GTA engine allowed some interesting mods (made a few simple ones myself) yet was pretty specific. GTA3 on the other hand had Renderware as an engine which is about as game-independant as you can expect.

A lot of the posts above i can''t even figure out what version of GTA they''re actually talking about :S
It''s funny because the first version of GTA I was exposed to was Vice City ... I totally 100% loved it. Much like you, I thought I would love to see this engine used in other games.

Luckily for me, my hopes and dreams were pretty much answered in the form of Tony Hawk UnderGround. I''ve wanted a skate game with a story ever since Skate or Die 2 was around

*Skate. Or. Die ... Skate or Die ... dddddd Die Die Die*

I wanted nothing more than a skate game where I could get off my board, walk around, interact, and possibly even drive cars.

Now I know the THuG engine still lacks a bit in the driving department, but it''s good enough for me ... I''m in love with that game.

but enough of my skate love ... as you were men

Okay, I need some clarification. You said the GTA engine, and you just meant the graphics engine? What? Who cares? I can''t imagine anyone basing a game idea on the freaking Renderware they might use with it.

Someone give an honest post that attempts to answer this question knowledgeably, so that I can see what on earth a reasonable answer to this question looks like.

As far as I can tell, it''s like saying, "You have a few buckets of red paint and some lumber. What''s the best kind of house to build?" It''s just not enough information for a rational conversation.

That was my point in my post above. Its like asking "which game is the best?" or "How do I make a game?" - the question is so vague that its pointless.

I''m guessing that he means the GTA 1 engine, because IIRC Rockstar released the source not so long ago.

That said, I can''t see the point of this thread. If it doesn''t develop a point shortly I''m closing it.
GTA1 source released? Any idea where I can get it? Rockstars site doesn''t appear to be working for me, and as soon as you put GTA into a search engine all you get is GTA3 stuff

(see, this thread has purpose once again )

I may have recalled incorrectly.. I don''t seem to be able to find it either. I seem to remember reading it somewhere though, but I may be confused - it often happens.

Then again... perhaps not.
