Okay, Martee, in reply, here's some excerpts from the article:
"[Why did you use XFree3.3.6 and not XF4?]
Because this is what I have installed at my PC. I will not install the (still) unstable XF4 and certainly I won't recompile my kernel, so don't ask me for it. I have seen people saying that the new DRI drivers only give you 10% better perfomance. Well, if this is true, Linux would *still* be behind Windows and BeOS R5."
"[Why did you use SMP?]
Because this is what kind of PC I got here. Linux was already compiled for SMP anyway. And as for BeOS, I disabled the second CPU and still, I only had 0.6 fps loss. So, the SMP point is not valid."
-EDIT-
On, and here's one last one:
"[Your benchmarks are bogus!]
Heh.. And you are dreaming! Why is it SO hard to accept that BeOS *does* have a very good OpenGL performance on its version 5? Why, oh why?!?"

BeOS what the worlds been missing...
I CANNOT use it on my machine since it doesnt support nVIDIA GeForce nor my ISDN modem. All I get is a shitty black and white screen. (what sucks is that it support Voodoo2,3,4 and 5).
- " I can show you the path, but I cannot carry you on my shoulders and walk it for you. You have to do the walking part."
That''s why I tend to stay away from other OS''s. Yes, they may be faster/more stable, but they just don''t have the hardware support. Until all hardware vendors start distributing drivers for those OS''s in the box, I won''t use them. I love having the lastest hardware, but what fun is having the latest if you can''t use them with your OS?

cyberben - no, it doesn''t. Check this out:

Aesthir - ok, I''ll concede the SMP point :-)
But as for XF86 4.0...I managed to install it, despite being a complete newbie to Linux, and I didnt have to recompile the kernel. It is quite stable, and gave a large performance increase (on my system, anyway, w/ TNT2).

ReactOS - an Open-source operating system compatible with Windows NT apps and drivers
You can use the VESA drivers to setup your res up to 1600*1200*16
In fact you have to spend some time on it.
I agree with the driver problem, simply send an email to your hardware manufacturer, and when they''ll receive enough email they will develop drivers or at least make required information publicly available.
BeOS is really the BEST OS I know.
(I tried, MacOS, QNX, Linux , Windows98, windows2000, and of course BeOS.)
Users have to ask dev and hardware manufacturer to write drivers for it.
It''s not hard to send an email...

BeOS is fast and cool.
For the no drivers thing, well ALOT of hardware is supported, and with the next update there wil be hw acc. OpenGL. 3Dfx is creating drivers for BeOS.. nVidia doesn''t, and they don''t give tspecs of their cards to BeOS, so blame them.
btw, the SBLive driver is here since 4.5

If anyone can find a driver for a toshiba cable modem pcx 1000 3com USB network interface i will gladly use BeOS, otherwise i have no connection to the internet + no games = sucks

Something i should mention....
I'm sure some of you saw the OpenGL benchmarks that were released a while back, showing BeOS destroying Windows and Linux. Well, these benchmarks aren't quite what they seem. First of all, it was a dual-cpu system. Windows(98) doesn't support dual cpus. Second, the Linux benchmarks were done on XFree86 3.3.6, I believe, and this is a hideously slow platform. They could've used XF86 4.0, which offers much better performance.
I'll take another look at BeOS when someone releases some *fair* benchmarks, on a single processor system (i.e. what 99% of us have), with all of the latest stuff for each platform. But until then, it's Win98 for gaming and coding, Win2k for work stuff, and Linux for, well, fun.
Just my 2 cents.

The dual processor had one CPU completely turned off and it STILL beat the other OS's. As for using 4.0, why don't you read the rebut on the BeNews page. She is a regular user that doesn't have time to recompile her setup, etc.... She did it to only show what the BETA drivers could do, not specifically make the others look bad. Just a comparison not a contest.

What are the options for compilers right now? Any decent IDE's?
They have CodeWarrior. And I think it uses GCC. There are ports of Perl and several other languages out there. There are also currently, some GUI creation apps to help with the C++ code. While a little outdated, the O'Reilly book "Programming The Be Operating System" is a good helper to understanding the BeBook stuff..
