Should I resort to RpgMaker?

My problem is I have lots of RPG ideas I want to experiment with, but with university and work, I don''t really have time to finish a quality engine. But I''d still like to explore some of my ideas, not nessarily to the point of a finished product. But at least enough to allow me to see how well the idea works. But the problem is I don''t like a lot about RPG maker. Such as the character system, items, combat, leveling, stats.. so what are peoples thoughts? ----------------------------------------------------- Writer, Programer, Cook, I''m a Jack of all Trades Current Design project Chaos Factor Design Document
I tried that at one point, hated it, quit using it. It just isnt that good, i decided to make an ascii rpg instead (it was the next easiest thing) and its getting somwhat near completion, and i learned alot in the process. The thing i dont like about rpg maker is that i like to make creative combat systems and stuff myself but it just wouldnt let it happen.

I used to use RpgMaker quite a bit...

I''ve seen some very nice custom battle systems made with it, and even got a pretty good start at making my own, and I have also seen custom character systems...

Its pretty hard to make stuff like that with it though, I would rather make my own game...

Try making the game in another game''s editing program. For example, the Dungeon Siege world editor is very powerful and will allow you to prototype your ideas. qeRadiant is another good choice for the prototype. Some people also use Warcraft III world editor. DARKBASIC is another chocie if you want to program something quickly.

RpgMaker...as in the old Playstation game?

Are you using an actual PS1 or are you using an emulator?

head over to rpgsource.net, they have listings of several other RPG maker type programs, that may suit your needs better. many of them are unfinished, but others are quite good.

There does seem to be alot a person can do with rpg maker 2003. Now that I've figured out how to code my own menus.
It also allows me to make maps quickly. Heck I even made a pacman clone but with zelda characters in about 30 minutes.

If you want to prototype things other than combat systems, try Never Winter Nights'' Aurora Toolset.

You could test out story and character interaction.
