How about making spell expandable, once a spell is cast its gone. By making the powerful and rare you could make spells a tool that can change the course of battle. A seemingly helpless enemy could unleash a powerful spell desimating your party.

Personally, I hate expendable things, so I wouldn''t enjoy a spell system like that... however it could be done as special items. For example, a magical heart of a demon that, when swallowed, transforms you into a demon temporarily.

Expendable goes on the whole idea of regents, how things are needed to cast spells. I personaly had the idea at one time after watching harry potter to have a regent based magic system. Each monster would have one or more parts that you could use for spell casting. These parts would be needed to cast varius spells rare monsters would have more valuable parts. They would either be exapendable or merely having them would allow you to cast a that spell. For instance troll tooth would be one of the needed ingridents to cast healing spells.

Actually, the idea of merely having an item to use it is a good one... they can be traded/sold which makes for a nice economy, and gives people reason to explore (to find rare ingredients).

I like andy_fish''s idea of Chi, but you could combined that with the idea of spell regents. If you have all the regents, the Chi cost would be low & without any of the regents the Chi cost would be at it''s highest. This way players aren''t forced into alot of time/money spent in collecting/buying regents. But if they do, there is clear benifits.
