Please, I don''t think, that fbsd is a linux distri, but it''s linux compatibility combined with nvidia drivers makes it a nice dev-platform. Furthermore it''s highly stable (at least for me) and feels more responsive than linux (2.6 could change this though)...
I just mentioned it as an interesting alternative to linux..
Make sure that you install WIN98 first because it will copy over the master boot record and destroy any linux boot-up information.
And make sure that you create a boot disk, because if you ever have to upgrade or reinstall any windows operating systems you will need a way to get back into linux and reconfigure grub/lilo.

With Gentoo, you compile everything before you install it... what else would a programmer use?!

If anyone tells you that one distro is better than another, they''re wrong. Use whatever you''re comfortable with, not what everyone else likes. And guess what... all of them have the same software!!
FreeBSD 5.* is about 80% Linux compatable. Most of what can be built on Linux, though, can be built natively on FreeBSD, or is already ported/patched and available via ports or binary pkg_add -r.

Unfortuneately, the only decent 3D games API available right now is DirectX. I''m having to force myself to use Windows, which I hate, to utilize it.

CrystalSpace is a mess, and shouldn''t even be argued as a kit for *nix. Pure OpenGL is decent--if your uber--and willing to use all kinds of different packages for input, sound, etc. Well, not that you''re doing anything different w/ DirectX; But at least its all together.
This would probably fit better in the Everything Unix forum...
I decided to go with mandrake, which version should i get? 9.2 rc 1 or 9.1? or 9? I was thinking about getting 9.1 or 9.2 so most of my hardware is supported and all the updates. and what is better kde or gnome? i liked kde a lot with knoppix.

oh and i was just wondering how you get knoppix installed on the hd. is mandrake better than knoppix? because if they are the same ill just install knoppix since its easier to install.

It's almost entirely personal opinion. There are some differences in their design and philosophies, but if you don't already know the differences they don't matter much anyway. Why not give them both a try?

Google turned this up: Knoppix Hard Disk Installation HOWTO.

Just for now I want to install knoppix,(ill move to mandrake when i get a good feel of linux) but how do i make knoppix 3.3 dual boot and not overwrite my stuff, i looked at the guide but is there an option for it. i saw the thing in the guide, it said to get grub, but im not sure exactly what i am supposed to do. i dont really want to overwrite my windows stuff

and i also wanted to know if there were any good free programs that i should get besides k3b, g++, gimp, kde, gnome, ect...
