is there a theoretical aproach on console-rpg battlesystems?

well... the topic should actually sum it up pretty well. what i actually search are some formulas like: difficulty = (enemies_health / average_damage) / ( partys_health / enemies_average_damage ) the idea behind such a collection of formulaes(?sp) is to deliver an controllable tool when calibrating or balancing the difficulty or the experience gained per monster. Hmmm.
So they may get less xp if they use the right potions in the right time?

nope - what i meant was balancing on a macro level in order to prevent the heros guided by an average player to gain levels in a rate not corresponding to the increase of monster difficulty (it'd be either to hard or to easy)
