thats what i mean, like when movies came out, people didnt just stop reading books did they? 2D cartoons are still more popular on tv then 3D rendered ones. Also, I''ve never played a 3D beat-em-up that even comes close to SF2 or Mortal Kombat. Computer game making is an art, not a science, and the 2D format makes it easier to be artistic. Basically my point is 2D graphics are more suited to some types of game: namely Beat ''em up, platform and, if this format still exists, the scrolling shoot-em''up. 3D graphics introduced us to a new form of game: the Doom-clone. or as other people or as the purists call it: a FPS. Obviously this type of game cannot be done in 2d. add to that list: Flight sims, car games, and thats about it.
In the case of sports sims (Football, basketball, tennis, etc.) 2D or 3D are equally applicable, depending on the style of the game.
To re-iterate my main point: I firmly believe that beat-em ups are much more fun when played in a 2d enviorment. (the only exception is wrestling which is shit no matter what enviorment its played in)
I probably should stop, My doctor says I have the wrists of an 80-year old
Is it just me or...
think about there is anything but a design issue (and taste in some level)
great 2d game sucessfully pass the 3d entrence exam (SONIC!! MARIO for the most average example)
it really depend on choice and talent of the designer 2D or 3D is not the real matter (nintendo are still using 2D sprite in full 3D environement (SMASH BROS) and it avoid the full 3d hype)
i think if some game are not fun in 3d it''s the designer lackness of talent (that''s why we haven''t got yet the beat them all of the 3D (SHENMUE??))
i''m still amaze in front of SONIC ADVENTURE 1 (the second sucks but it''s because the one is much better)
the speed, the fun, the camera, all the 2d taste but in a 3d shape...
it''s because they rethink HOW to have the same feel with another tool
remember that platform game were suppose unplayable in FREE 3d but in a bastard 2d/3d shape (BUG, CRASH BANDICOOT, PANDEMONIUM but NIGHT INTO DREAM reinterpret it well) but when MARIO 64 was release it was like a kind of revelation (and later ZELDA 64)
we see a lot of clone using this kind of gameplay
think about it
it''s not 2D vs 3D
it''s just design
