Hey I am new to ai and I want to make a racing game like rc pro am on the nes. I really don''t know where to start but I was wondering if someone could help me find some information on finding ways to make the computer cars move around the track, and speed up and slowdown... and actualy race against the user. I know how to actually make them move and animate but I am looking for the ai part to actually make the cars competitive instead of just moving around the course. I want to thank all for their help in advance Joe
Usually (AFAIK) there will be a set of pre-programmed paths, represented as splines or something, that represent the optimal path around the track.

To make a computer driver more difficult you ensure that is follows this path as closely as possible. To make the computer driver less difficult you allow it deviate more from this path. So, the more deviation you allow from the ''perfect'' path the worse the driver becomes.

In reality there may be more than one optimal path around your track. You can include as many as you like, and let the computer decide which one it wants to follow. This could make your game more interesting.

Good luck,
Will
