What app should I use for pre-rendered sprites?

What would be a good app to create a sprite sheet for a pre-rendered char? I have 3ds max 4 so I am guessing I can use that. But how do I render a character thats not anti-aliased and has a magenta background to a gif or png file with 3ds?
