My X is broken...

Well, I installed Debian 3 on the second computer this morning, and it all went fine, until I tried to start the X server. I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 several times with different options, and I get one of three outcomes: (1) with the vga driver, it loads, and starts KDE, but at something like 320x240, 16 colours. Which isn't exactly usable. (2) with any other settings it either exits gracefully, saying no displays found, or (3) gets to a black screen, and hangs, not responding to anything other than Ctrl-Alt-Del. Then, it reboots, but I don't see anything until the POST screen. I checked the documentation on debian.org, and can't see anything there that might explain what's happening. Does anyone have any suggestions? [edit: sp] [edited by - sbennett on July 18, 2003 8:31:36 AM]
Firstly, I suggest that you install the packages "discover", "mdetect", and "read-edid" before your next attempt to reconfigure X (they add a lot of autoconfiguration ability to the debconf script).

Secondly, we probably need at least some information about the machine and some precise information about what went wrong (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) if we''re going to help debug your problem.

Sorry, I forgot to mention hardware. Athlon 1000, 128MB RAM, 32MB Geforce2 MX.

The XFree86.0.log from my last attempt (with the vesa driver) is here.

Nevermind, I seem to have solved it. I''m using the nv driver with framebuffer support turned off. Thanks anyway.
i was jsut going to tell you to do that.

framebuffer X support does not work. I don''t know why they call it debian stable when its not #!$#$@#ing stable...

The strange thing is, X works fine with the framebuffer on my other computer, using the tdfx driver with a Voodoo3.
