I mean a RTS, but not a c&c or aoe clone with big armies. So you''re landing on a planet and have to explore it, interacting with the creatures and landscape, establish a base, train specialists... may be like alpha centauris, but real time, and adventure-oriented (the point is not to colonize the entire planet, but to "discover" it, may be to understand the story of this world...). What do you thing about it ? Any ideas about the gameplay ? How can I make this game enjoyable ? Thank you ------------------------ - Seby - www.dfhi-bomber.fr.st

Gladiators?

You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.

I''ve never played Gladiators, but I think Gladiators is more squad-oriented.
I think of the possibility of build and extend a base, gather ressources (like in the usual RTS), and train scouts and scientific, to discover and study the worlds, creatures and vegetation, to learn to communicate with the inhabitants when you meet some, may be technology trade, train "soldiers" to fight hostile creatures...

Is that a good base to start a RTS ?

CAESAR III? Sounds like it...

Caesar III (and the others clones) are rather "management"'s game. I'd really like to add more adventure in this genre of games, but I'm not sure of the result.
Maybe the player will have to much to manage.

your idea sounds simply kickass, a game like that would rock and you have the advantage of bringing something new to the table. If you do make it so that no, we are not here to kill creature(or species) X and no, we are not here to build a huge profitable colony (a la management games) but we are here to explre, to discover to learn, there is some management maybe with the stuff you arrived on planet with, and maybe other stuff nasa/whoever sends you every now and then, but you have a scientific mission, like Ben Bova''s book Mars (and lots of other mars stories) or like a bradbury story premise (w/o the inevitable alien encounter maybe). You really piqued my interest with that plot though, if you make it 3d and cool looking like ground control maybe, maybe more zoomed in, i could see a real classic with that idea, like civ 2 classic.

Sounds like a neat idea - I think there''s loads than can be done with the RTS structure - like add a more adventure slant to it. You could have events / puzzles / quests(?) pop up as the player explores the world....

Definetly has possibilities....

Long ago on the Commodore 64 I played a game titled “Seven Cities of Gold.” In that game you played to role of a Captain of a Spanish ship, seeking funds from the Queen to search out new lands. The game allowed you to befriend the natives or to attack them and take what belonged to them. There was a bit of adventure to the game but not as much as what you are suggesting. You might want to get a C64 emulator and download that game to check it out. Ignore the blocky graphics and play the game – I think you’ll get a lot out of it if you can do this
