Half-Life 2
Just wondering how likely people think it is, that Valve with grace us with HL2 for linux? I have heard rumours that it is developed for DirectX, so it seems like we will miss out on it as well
Stu
If something is developed with a Quake engine (or Doom engine, in the near future) there''s a very very high chance of it getting ported.
If something is developed with an Unreal engine, there''s a medium change it will get ported (thanks to the work of the people at icculus.org).
However, Valve''s Source engine doesn''t yet have an OpenGL rendering backend as far as I know. So, unless someone at Valve is a devoted *nix-person or someone at icculus.org gets to look at the code and port it (like they do with so many Unreal based games), it''s doubtful we''ll get a port.
It''s possible, though doubtful, that WineX already can run Halflife 2. However, due to the nature of the WineX project (anyone who pays can vote which games will get supported) it''s likely that Halflife 2 will be put into the list of game they''re working to support (which could take as little as a month to as long as a year or maybe two, I suppose).
So, you should hope that Valve gives icculus.org a chance to port it if you want to see it quickly.
