was it a fatal exception OE or OD?
ODs are sometimes hardware...like a bad memory chip possibly
Also, if it's a consistant message or even fairly consistant, you can try looking it up at www.microsoft.com/technet
I used to work for gateway's tech support, and that's the 1st thing that we used to do is check out technet....

Anyone want a free computer? (i hate mine)
Need help? Well, go FAQ yourself. "Just don't look at the hole." -- Unspoken_Magi
not sure, i don''t know what oe and od stand for off the top of my head. now the problem reappears inconsistently, as it seems to work ok again (for now).
there still is something wrong though. whenever windows searches for plug and play devices i lose my floppy drive (which requires a restart) and a couple times during installation i was getting "windows protection error, you must restart your computer". aargh!!
don''t you just love computers?
thanks again everyone, especially for the overheating suggestion, i would have NEVER thought of that in a million years.

Yeah, I''ll take the computer.
E-mail me at BenBeanDogDilts@cs.com to work out an agreement (you give me the computer, i give you respect)

Yah, it may help to know what the real specs are on your comp. Is it an Intel PIII? Cause I've heard a lot of stuff about the AMD's especially the K6-2's had a lot of trouble. We bought 17 K6-2 400Mhz machines at work and there horrible, they don't compare to the Intel Penitum-MMX 200Mhz machines! They also run very hot (I'm surprised that, that guy could even run it without a fan!) We've got fans on all of them, but also it has weird problems with other Hardware, it requires patches to run Win95 and just simply takes a lot of wasted time to keep running well.
Oh yah, it's some weird problem with the Plug & Play network cards when there's an ISA video card in them, this is no big deal seems how all the ISA are getting replaced now, but still the intel's have no problem.
At home I didn't want to go through that sort of thing especially for my developement machine. So I bought all brand name stuff, it costs a couple hundred more, but I haven't had a single crash or blue screen in the 5 months I've had so far, and I compile buggy things all the time! :-)
See ya,
Ben
In case your wondering my machine is an Intel PIII 533b w/ 128Mb of ram on the P3C2000 motherboard w/ a voodoo3 3000 video card and a SoundBlasterLive. (By the way, the p3c2000 is a very nice motherboard, it'll take *ANY* PIII chip and has two serial ports on top of the PS2 mouse conector as well as two on board USB ports and has options for built on hardware if you like that)

Few clarifications for cybergen:
I was most certainly not running my AMD without a fan. I actually got a larger fan for it, as I was aware when I bought the chip of the heat problem inherent in AMD''s. When I bought my Voodoo3, though, that fan wasn''t enough to keep the AMD cool with the Voodoo near it, so I opened the computer''s case, stuck a full-sized room fan in a position where it blew directly into the open side of the case (I keep my tower under my desk so it''s no big deal) and fixed it that way. In the winter when it''s not hot, I don''t have the problem (I don''t have air conditioning in my house.)
I happen to love my AMD K6-2 450. It''s a very reliable hardy little chip, other than the heat thing. I also love the Celeron 300a that I have overclocked to 450 on my other machine... took 15 minutes to overclock and it''s run beautifully (and cooler than the AMD interestingly enough) ever since. I happen to dislike Intel because I think they overcharge for products which really aren''t better. I''ve helped several friends install AMD''s in their systems, and they have never had problems either.
I am not, by the way, a guy.

two thumbs up for AMD yeah
There's always something smaller and something bigger. Don't sweat the small stuff and don't piss off the big stuff :)
Yeah, AMD is great. I have a Cyrix, and I don't have a lot of faith in it. People have told me that Cyrix chips can't handle a lot of 3d computation, and my computer does crash a lot during games.
Hehe..
Fel, you should change your name to I'm_Not_A_Guy, so you don't have to keep explaining that

Just kidding...unless you want to really give away your computer
