Simplifying an idea to get the work done?
Hey all.
I''m just looking for some ideas to put my engine to use on. So far I have a semi functional 3d terrain/level editor made using MFC, and I''m looking to put it to some use. The plan was to work on making an RPG, having already done some of the basics. However I''ve decided instead to simplify my ideas to ensure I get a complete game. I was kinda inspired by benjamin bunny''s Wizard dual, it''s simple, small with only one level, both players have the same abilities, but it really works and makes for quite a nice action packed game. So I''d like to do something similar (not a rip off) that would be a logical step forward rather than a leap into something I probably can''t manage on my own.
I really want this project to be fun though, something to make the work worthwhile, I want to make an action packed game with some reasonably exciting visuals, good soundtrack and packed with fun. My initial idea I''m toying with is perhaps something based in a city. Buildings would be pretty easy to make simple models of myself, though I''d probably go for the cardboard exterior only style buildings for the time being to simplify matters (otherwise I''d need to look at adding indoor rendering functionality). Perhaps something along the lines of GTA 3, but simpler and with a different gameplay premise. GTA 3 really goes for the freedom element, which would be difficult for an intermediate project, instead I''d rather concentrate on something straightforward, but I''m finding it hard to come up with anything exciting AND simple at the same time.
I''m thinking something along the lines of Diablo on steroids, really pushing the mindlessness of it, but making it all out action.... something purely fun, not necessarily realistic or offering huge freedom in actions (that can come later in future projects), but just all out adrenaline packed button bashing (well perhaps a little skill might help!!).
I want it to make some sense though, I want to set it in present or future times.
So so far I have this:
The game is going to be set in a city,
will feature lots of mindless action (but hopefully fun),
present/future setting,
simple but believable (ish) premise (ie not "you have a spaceship now save the Earth"),
outdoor environment (no interiors, or very simplistic ones).
I guess that''s all I have so far (the idea is still young!), but I''d be interested to hear if anyone can come up with some interesting ideas using that as a basis. I''m toying around with the idea of using vehicles in it too, vehicles are always fun, but I don''t want it to be a pure rip off of GTA.
Hmm... perhaps something based on gang warefare.... now I''m off to do some further thinking, but if anyone can extrapolate my ideas further into something that might be manageable by a single person, I''d love to hear any suggestions. Of course, I''ll keep thinking about it myself, I don''t wanna steal ideas, but it''s always good to bounce around some thoughts.
