should the game design document contain pictures from books, website ect.... of units for the artists to start with?

Sure, if you think it will help. Alternatively just point to references in the real world or books/online for your artists to look at.
The design document... probably the biggest sticking point for all (wannabe) game designers.
In my opinion, pictures from other games should be placed in the Game Treatment; the treatment should contain anything and everything that will help anyone that reads about your game to quickly understand the style and concept of your game.
Design Documents are different... do a search for Chris Taylor and design document on Google... he has a really great outline for you to go by.
