I''d like to know what you all like to do for your 2d effects. For what types do you simply use a bitmap sequence(w/hardware assist), and what types do you do actually do per-pixel editing? I guess in a game where graphics quality is about the same as that of diablo2. I was playing Age of Wonders and it seemed to have alot of on-the-fly pixel-editing for some explosions. cheers, muffin

Could be wrong but I would guess they used just reg prebuilt surfaces for a lot of their stuff. Per pixel would be pretty expensive...

In the game-engine im developing, particles can be used to make "neat" explosions. They are not meant to be the only thing though, so I would use a pre-rendered explosion animation and add the particles on top...

just an idea...
