Are fonts patented?
Do I need a licence to make graphics (with text) that use certain fonts?

Well, some (most) fonts are copyrighted by someone or a company. I dunno more then that though.
Can they sue you for using their fonts or to ask you to remove them from your arwork?

Well, I have used a lot fonts in artwork and stuff för games and such, and I never really thought about it. If you are not going to make any money from it, then I wouldn''t worry. Including the font (.ttf and that) files with a program sounds dangerous though.

That was a funny typo :D
"FÖR" instead of "FOR"... Someone is starting to mix up languages badly here
Fonts, just like artwork and photography, are copyrighted by their respective type designers/firms. If you recieve any font with a program you''ve purchased, such as Photoshop or Illustrator, you get a limited licence for use of all of the fonts included. Also, most "free" fonts found on the web are unrestricted for use. You can only truly get in sh!t if you rip off a company''s font and then run it in a huge series of commercial pieces (prints, ads, etc. you use to make money).
Hope this helps...

This book has a LOT of information about font copyrights. Its a cheap book, but a must for any artist.
And, just so you know, if you get a free font, make sure you adjust your kerning, especially with any titles etc... Thats usually why they are free, their default kerning sucks.

Fonts on this site are either free or shareware. Which means that can use them freely.
On the other hand, a font like Garamond (IIRC) is commercial, hence you must pay to use it.
Now the one thing I know, is that if you use a copyrighted material as part of a work of art, the copyright doesnt apply as long as you are reusing the font as a part of a greater thing. Of course, that''s subject to interpretation, but it''s the same principle that allows Hollywood to make "remakes" of a classic like _The Seven Samurai_ and turn it into _The Seven Magnificent_; or some obscure DJ to do a remix of a known song and make millions out of it without owing anything to the original creator...
