My views on magic (both in games and real life (sort of)):
Magic is technology which the vast majority of people do not understand. (eg: in medieval times magnets may have been considered "magic" because few people understood how/why they worked)

My magic system is based on Einsteins theory that matter is frozen energy:

Matter is frozen energy, energy is frozen thought.
So if you could learn to control your thought to manipulate energy, you could probably also learn to manipulate matter through energy.
That is what "sorcery" in my system is.
Psionics, in this system, is if you could somehow skip energy altogether and manipulate matter through thought.

I went really in-depth and wrote a mini-article on it for personal refference.
I have thought "particles" and energy are lumps of thease particles stuck together and matter is lumps of "energy" lumps stuck together. I called the particles: manna.

Anyway, thats the basis of my magic system, though i went much more in-depth (i even explained how magic wands work and why there is elemental magic).

Just thought Id share my system with everyone.

Could be an interesting read, issch, you ought to post a link to your article here.

I hope no one minds, I''m going to start a new topic on this because that "WHYYYYY" post stretches every line out and eliminates proper wrapping, and it''s driving me nuts.

I nuked it - sorry it took a while before I noticed.
''Sufficiently high technology is indistinguishable from magic'' - A.C.Clarke

I don''t have anything particularly useful to add, one idea I''ve been working on (setting only, no mechanics) is an ancient planet with unbelievably high technology (now all overgrown & disused, indeed, practically invisible). A load of ''primitive'' (read: medieval level, although not actually taken from that time) humans is put there. Technology use comes from crystal like things that are rare, but scattered over the planet. Various crystals have different effects, some will be absorbed into the body (thus acting like learnable spells), some are activated by emotions etc. They take time to recharge (body energy, or solar energy).
JunC : ever read the Hawkmoon series by Michael Moorcock ?
