Garriot - Yeah, I loved Ultima, but I wasn''t alive when the first ones came out. They just didn''t seem groundbreaking. And don''t get me started on UO. Knew I shoulda played it back when it was good.

Molyneaux - I hated Populous and Black and White. Respect, yes, like his games, no.

Dani Bunten - I should have remembered M.U.L.E., I just played a game the other day.

As for the OP suggestion of HSW, I just point you at what he''s doing today. One good game does not make you a "best" of anything.

Two outta three good games isn''t that bad. And after they took out the whole falling in a pit thing in E.T., when they released it on computer, it wasn''t THAT bad. But being recognized as the person responsible for destroying a mutli-million dollar company prolly ended his short career.

-- Sid Meier (civilization)
-- Warren Spector (System Shock, Deus Ex)
-- Richard Garriot (Ultima series)

Not sure of the names, can''t check them right now, but this would be my list:

1. Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky and some others (Fallout)
2. Guys at Codogames (UFO: Enemy Unknown, LSN)
3. Sirtech guys (Jagged Alliance 1&2)

My favorites list is based more on accomplishment than individual games.

David Braben - Although his career hasn''t been too impressive (compared to some of the other "great ones"), his work on Elite was. 18 years later, I still fire this game up once in a while. Braben along with Ian Bell, managed to create a huge universe (over 1000 unique planets), with various missions, using 3D graphics on computer with 64k and .4MHz processors!

Gary Gygax - Ya said GAME designers, not VIDEO GAME designers! ;-) Of course, we all know him. He created the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons that nearly every CRPG to this day is based off of. Ya have to admit that it was quite a bit of detail to be accomplished with just pen and paper.

Tim Schafer - In this case, his games speak louder than his accomplishments. Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, and Monkey Island were some of the most entertaining games I''ve played.

Although these are some of my favorites of past to present, I believe Peter Molyneux and Will Wright will probably have a huge influence on games of the future.
