Original post by krez AnonymousPosterChild: it would be 360 degrees, so behind the character wouldn''t be blocked, just behind walls and such... also, if the game rules dictate that the character should be able to hear someone off around the corner or something, there would be an indication of such (although the exact nature of the sound-maker wouldn''t be apparent until it was in sight).
You could use visual clues to represent noise heard from the areas out of sight. Like a footstep icon that blinks in the average position where the character thinks he''s listening steps coming from.
You could have many icons, like crossed swords for fighting, etc.
This could allow added plus to your game: this time skills like tracking and enhanced senses could really be usefull in a game concept.
A character with enhanced hearing could idenfity more accurately where the sound comes from (the sound icon would be likely in the same place as the sound source).
The memory thing is also darn interesting: it could allow the character''s intelligence/wisdom to affect gameplay. Stupid characters could easily forget what was inside a certain room, as example.
If this same system also affects the enemies/NPC AI, then you''ll have something very interesting in your hand.
