X windows help
Ok this is usually why I tend to avoid the X windows system.
I am still new to the *BSD world and have avoided using X in order to better familiarize my self with shell commands and the like. The time finally came for me to try to get X running and I ran into a wall.
I have been running FreeBSD 4.7 for the better part of a month now on an old PIII 450 with a 10gig hard drive and 128megs of ram. I haven’t had any problems until I tried to configure X.
I stared out by tying to use xf86cfg in both the graphic and text mode to configure the X server, but every time I received an error message telling me that the X server failed to be configured properly (just as a side note I do have all the correct information about my monitor sync rates and video card).
So, I tried using xf86config. When I got to the part about picking my video card (S3 Trio 3D) it said something about not supporting the S3 Trio 3D and that it would try to use a generic VGA driver. Needless to say, X failed to load again. So, I went on line and checked the Xfree86 site which states that the S3 Trio 3D is supported. At this point I am totally clueless about what to do. Any help would really be appreciated.
illegitimati non carborundum!
as root try typing
XFree86 -configure
That should make a XF86Config file that you need to edit to set the sync rates and resolution you want. It will detect your video card and preset some options.
Once you learn how to set up X the first time you''ll be ok.
sound like you should use the s3virge driver if that helps any.
You can search google for a example XF86Config from someone with your chipset. It will be pretty much the same between linux and freebsd.

Get the latest X version for *BSD and you shouldn''t have any problems with that.

wrong, it depends on the version of X installed with the 4.7 distro of *BSD. Oh and FYI, S3Virge and S3Trio3D aren't the same thing at all.

thats the name of the driver the S3Trio3D uses.
the version of XFree86 that FreeBSD 4.7 came with does support that card according to the documentation.
