Where to start...

Yes I can program, yes i know windows, DX, etc. However, I have no ideas on what kinda projects to use my skill in. I want to make a game - can''t draw, don''t know any artist. I want to make a windows application - have no idea what i want it to do. Does anyone have anything they wanted to do but couldn''t get around do? I need some busy work or a project.
I am in need of sort of a 3D map editor for a project I''m currently working on, and don''t have time to write one myself. Don''t know if that''s the kind of thing you''re looking for though.

I find it helpful to try programming in every genre possible. So if you recently made an arcade game, do an RPG or something. Contrast. You learn all sorts of things doing this.

As for sprites, I can make some simple ones for you...

3D map editor? ehheh, thats not exactly "the caliber" of project im looking for.
That''s what I figured, I''m not too keen on the idea myself, but I suppose it must get done sometime...

Why not just use your knowledge to help others still trying to learn the ropes? Maybe you can help all those out there just trying to figure out what the hell they need to learn. When you help people, and they really benefit from it, you feel like your invincible, because YOU just enlightened someone on something they never knew before. Maybe thats why some people actually WANT to be teachers...

Yeah...YEAH!

I like helping ppl!
Thats a good idea!
Oh wait, I already help ppl...and I already feel invincible ....I need something for me, know-what-i-mean?
*grin* When I opened this thread I thought
"Oh boy, another ''how do I start'' thread."
But it''s YOU Zipster!!

Hehe.

Actually the 3D map editor is a good project to start - it will have to feature reasonable framerates ( 15+ ), mouse picking, user interface elements, possibly multiple windows.
If you make it right, it could be quite a project, and multipurpose too.

It's only funny 'till someone gets hurt. And then it's just hilarious.Unless it's you.
I know how you feel, I suck at art, so what I did was I went into paintbrush and did some dodgy pictures (using two colours most of them, the adventurous ones used 3)
Once I had some pictures to work with, I started on a game, just a simple side view game. No scrolling either. I also made the huge mistake of not having a design document but that''s another story.
Basically, I had the gameplay down and I let out a really small demo to show how it played. Well people liked it and one guy offered to do some better pictures for it. So I said yes and now I have some decent stuff in my game.
Check out slayfest.cjb.net under the screenshots section and look at how it started and what it looks like now.
You seem like you could put together a good game, you know the ways with programming and stuff so the game design won''t be suffocated by lack of knowledge. Just do some simple stuff, and leave it open for expansion. Get the gameplay figured out, make a level editor and see what happens.

Good luck
