Check out nevrax. It's entirely opensource and the screenshots looked really nice.

Can''t recall what the engine used in Asheron''s Call 2 is called, but it looks pretty impressive. Don''t know if they''re licensing it though.
You should qualify that in Nevrex, it''s not open source, it''s GPL, which menas that it completely and utterly excludes being used in any pay to play manner.
The fact that you have to release your code in it''s entirity means that it will be probably be rife with cheaters who have figured out all the problems with the engine.
There are a few ways that it IS usable, but that involves using only the graphics engine for the client and writing your own network engine that plugs into it. Even at that point, it is very hard to avoid having to distribute all of the source for everything on your client. GPL licenses are nothing short of a nightmare and Nevrex isn''t honestly (IMO) worth evaluating it for a half hour.
MMO games require high bandwidth outgoing connections and unless you''re independently wealthy (and VERY wealthy at that) you can''t make money on a ''free'' MMOG.
Sometimes the utopian GPL community gives me a headache with their impression that everything should be free. Reality is that without reward people (not everyone, just 99% of them) won''t put in more work than is absolutely required. The concept of a GPL MMO is about as good as the concept of financially sustainable sites based upon user contributions.

The Newrax people do intend to make money on their project. They relese the code under the GPL and chage you a fee for the time you use their servers, I think they also said something about charging for the game content..still the code is GPL''d and so far the game looks really impressive.
