The ideal LAN game? ;)

Me and some buddies are going to be writing a LAN-orientated game to be played across the school network, but we have too many ideas to narrow down. Our only restriction we''ve set is that it doesn''t go beyond 2 dimensions (ie, no 3D). Fitting this simple criteria: -Text or graphic based -If graphic, than 2D only -The game must be multiplayer Basically, we want the game to be able to be picked up and played at any time.. this is essentially going to be a "free-time killer" during classes, that we''re going to distribute to fellow students. So..throw out some suggestions (don''t waste my time with crap posting) for the "ideal time-killing, played-when-you''re-bored LAN game". swift URL | browse my bookmarks [server may not always be on]

quake1 will always be my favourite... to many fond memories

wolfentstein also good, but only if u have 16+ players...barricade the doors or something, and get the entire class in on it
Maaaaaaaahahaha. Who''s da king baby?

oh sorry, i did not finish reading ur post...

in that case try a multiplayer starcraft...it seems to popular at my school..never seen so many people eager to get into a library before
Err... I think he said he wants to make this game, not buy it and play it ^-^

Really fun, time killing games generally will have a "one-for-all" and a team based choice of playing. I think it''s really fun to play with teams and have an objective, so you can celebrate your victory with a group of people but sometimes you just want to go all out and see who can be the last man standing ^_^.

Capture the flag based games generally tend to be very time consuming, and really not to hard to create. Give it a shot.

Have you played Pocket Tanks? Great game, but it''s one lacking point is that it doesn''t have network multi-player. Basically it is a scorched earth clone, and who hasn''t dreamed of a network multi-player version?

Always remember, you''''re unique. Just like everyone else.

here´s a few other points:

-turn based (because you can´t alway be there when you´re in class), with time limits and automoves.

-simple interface, minimise klicks or keystrokes (in case it´s a quiet class)

-match time about 35-40 minutes, with approximately one turn per minute.

-ideally 32+ players, maybe even persistant matches (/arenas) so that a game can last a whole school day.

-server switching

as for ideas... strategy could always work, maybe a turn-based racing game? robot arena?

have a look at some of the persistant online (browser based) strategy games that are around.
Play the old SNES Super Bomberman....draw insperation from the multiplayer aspects of that game...cross with capture the flag, or dodgeball, or any number of sports...and you will have a fun little game on your hands
It all depends on how you plan to play the game, if you all will be playing at the same time then somthing fast paced, and simplistic would IMHO be the best. But if you were going to play this game over a long period of time, say a year, a graphical MUD or somthing would be really fun as well. Good Luck!
This is funny, continuing on the multiplayer pong ider. How about [ car, tank, Elephant, ... ] soccer. It should be slow paced, top view, with a huge soccer ball.
