I want to get the latest version of Linux, and I am done downloading all three of the ''psyche'' .isos from Redhat mirrors. Unfortunately, all the CD writing software I have is Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0. Can you help me create a bootable CD, or point me to any tutorials? I''ve read the help files to create a bootable CD in Easy CD Creator 5.0, and, according to the Help files, this is what I should do: - File->New CD Project->Bootable CD - Bootable CD Type: Floppy Disk Emulation (1.44MB) - Use existing image file (boot.img-extracted from images/boot.img) - Ok. - Select Source Files: Desktop - Select ''psyche-i386-disc1.iso'' - Add - Record My CD-R burned successfully, and when I looked at it from the Windows information, it said: ''Free space: 0 bytes Total size: 0 bytes''. I am assuming this is because it is supposed to be a bootable CD, and Windows XP probably should not be able to detect this. When I rebooted my computer with the CD-R in the CD-ROM drive, I made sure that the computer would check for a boot image from the CD-ROM drive. It checked, but could not find one. Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here? Thanks! </a></font>

I''m not very familiar with Roxio''s Easy CD Creator, but I wondered about a few steps there. Why would you create a "New CD Project" when burning an iso? This is the procedure you would do when you make a new compilation.

I don''t think you should need to do anything special to have it boot. I burned RedHat Linux a few times, and all I had to do was to launch Nero select "Burn Image" select the ISO and burn it, and it booted just fine.

If you have trouble booting off cd''s in general, you can of course use a boot disk (created from the disk images), or install from http of ftp site.

You don''t have to create a bootable CD.. just burn the .iso as a normal image and it will work File->CD Image (or something like that)
Im not sure if this is the problem, but you need to rename the ISOs... look on the www.redhat.com website, theres a whole FAQ section about this.

Thanks for your input. While I was getting posts here I was looking on roxio''s message boards, and a search and one thread showed that you use a ''Burn CD from Image'' to create a CD. The person was trying to make Redhat Linux, too. I''ll update you guys if it boots or not. Thanks!

I tried that, but it didn''t work.

Are the cd''s ok otherwise, ie you can view their contents from explorer?

If so, either the burn was bad, your cd reader is bad, your motherboard is oold, or your bios is misconfigured.

I''d try with another burning proggy, to see if it makes any difference.

Last resort, create a boot disk from one of the disk images that come with RedHat''s distribution, and either install from the cd''s, from the isos stored on a FAT32 partition, or network (ie. http/ftp).

Can you view the files in Explorer? No.
Burn was bad? No.
CD reader was bad? No.
Motherboard was old? No. (Athlon/XP generation)
BIOS misconfigured? No. (works with other bootable CDs)

Nero, for some reason, does not accept any of the CD-Rs to burn it, it claims it doesn''t have enough space. Redhat CD 1 is 655MB, and these are 700MB CD-Rs. Thanks. Maybe I''ll try a couple more times, and I''ll try a different brand of CD-Rs, although my current setup seems the best: Memorex 40x CD-R/RW, Memorex 700MB CD-Rs.

You should be able to view the files in explorer, as they are regular CDs. So, in some way or the other, the images haven''t been burned correctly. Have you tried stuff the isos into a proggy such as Daemon-Tools, to see if they are healthy?

A note, the procedure you described in the original post, would not produce a good CD. You shall simply burn the ISOs as is, the steps about disk emulation and boot images are not going to help.

About Nero. It needs cache when you are going to burn a compilation, as it needs to create the image first. The error you describe sounds like that, but you should never get that error when burning an image (iso) as that file is the "cache". Are you sure you didn''t try to make a "new compilation" rather than simply select "Burn Image"?

I am totally sure. All I did was selected ''Burn Image'', chose the RedHat .iso, and let it burn. Oh, wait, now it does not burn because it says that my CDs do not have enough space.

Also, what is the deal with this ImageDrive? Once I installed it, I decided to write a file through the image drive, and it produced a Nero Image File (.nrg I think). I would try and burn this file onto a CD, but it will not let me burn CDs!

Could this work in Easy CD Creator 5.0, like I tried in the first place? It sounds like a much better solution. Thanks!
