Isometric Art - what does Transport Tycoon make look so good

I''ve been into drawing iso tiles for a while now... I''m not a expirienced artist, I just make art to cover my programming projects. Now, I really really wonder what''s that magic that makes Transport Tycoon tiles look so good. I don''t talk about the ground, but about the buildings... I can''t manage to do such good sprites... I even sat for about an hour in front of the computer doing one wall and not, it''s no good. What techniques would you suggest? Drawing and then scan (I think I''m not bad at drawing by hand)... SHould I model them in 3d and then render? Where''s the magic of the colors and shades and shadows hidden? I read the tutorials on spritedomain.net but it''s not what I wanted. THANKS.
btw. I draw by hand (pixel tool , PSP 4, I tried the add noise filter which helped a little.
