RPG-Slash-em-up hybrid...
Right heres what I''m planning on doing:
A 3D RPG with detailed combat system that is still easy to use...
As I still haven''t gotten very far into 3D programming I was going to develop the combat system in a text based environment for initial testing of the system itself, along with AI weapons and magic...
Is this a good idea? Or should I wait till I''m done with 3D?
Thanks for listening

Cool idea, but I''m not exactly sure what you mean. Have you ever played Zelda: Ocarina of Time? That''s an RPG with a cool battle system- it''s kind of an action ''battle system''. Secret of Mana also has something that might be considered a hack-em-up battle system.
I think you should finish with 3d programming... but then again, I''m only familiar with C++, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

3D Math- The type of mathematics that'll put hair on your chest!
Have you played quest 64? All about that game was bad, but the battle system was good. It is still turn based but in your turn you can move towards or from an enemy (within your ''circle''), and attack or use magic. Then the enemy can do the same thing. If you walk out the big circle around you and your enemies you''ll escape the battle.
the idea of writing it a part of the game in text then intergrating it with the graphics part later is a good idea... as long as you now the 2d 3d system well... I do a lot of this my self... like when I implemented a file archiving engine for a game library...
wich reminds me... I''m looking for a partner... I need some one to help me port it to Mac... I don''t have a mac so I don''t know how to code for it... I''ve got a lot of the work on for win9x... I''ll start porting it to dos and linux this summer... so if anyone is interrested.... let me know... e-mail is best... greatmilenko@crosswinds.net

Actually I had 4 sources of inspiration for my idea:
Zelda ocarina of time,
Final Fantasy VII,
Baldur''s gate,
and last but not least an internet text-based RPG called dragonrealms...
Here''s some basis on what I was thinking of...
combat:
-Stance changes from defensive to offensive.
-Multiple types of attacks (more than usual to add skill factor, but not so many as to confuse player) with sword, along with possibility to attack with fists and kicks, with learning of special abilities as game progresses.
-Multiple grips (reverse grip, 2-handed grip) along with combat with 2 weapons...
magic:
-Sorta AD&D style magic with basis around engraved runes, enchanted items and engraving of runes. With scrolls supplying quick single use powers.
-Getting rid totally of magic points...
Theres a lot of other stuff I''ve been thinking about but those above were just some of my ideas... I''d be hoping if I ever got this done with a good 3D engine, combat would really be action packed, and would remind you of a scene from some swords and sorcerors style movie instead of just your usual turn based combat...
Anyone tell me your ideas, criticisms, & comments.
