One last example. About 4 years ago i knew a guy in a band that was trying to get some publicity. We went around to a number of homeless people and stated that we would give them $10 cash and $20 in McDonalds gift certificates (he worked there part time) if they would hold up a sign that said "Saving money for the new Schultz album, please help!" then it had the bands website address listed on the bottom. Got mentioned in a couple papers and on the radio, tons of traffic. Sure, a couple of the homeless guys took the upfront stuff we gave (gave them $10 worth of the gift certificates up front, then the rest after they had been there a few hours), but most of them stayed.

Good idea, but isnt this taking advantage of the homeless? only kidding. I like the idea of extending advertising fruther than the net. It stands to reason as larger companies do this all the time.

Anybody else ever advertise in magazines or newsprint, bill boards etc?

TRY OUT URL History, ediitng the IE address bar has never been this easy!

Well I was going to mention the billboard when I first started reading the forum, but someone already mentioned it. It is by far one of the most effective means of advertising. I currently have a opening on a interstate billboard that runs $250 per month and a one time production fee of $450. If your looking for a flux of visitors this is by far an excellent choice. Did I mention the board is located next to the 2nd largest cross in the western hemisphere on I-40?

And if your looking for increased exposure and visitors to your website, looking to promote a game or project, or just have some cool gaming related products I sure can help with that as well. My company is on the verge of launching our new gaming site. We already have a few agreements for distribution sales of a few games and playable online games. Go Tokyo Wars We are currently looking for more partners to feature their online game, has a game for sale and download, free game to play online or to download for name recognition and work recognition, or any other gaming related products or sites. Our parent company has it''s root in online promotion and advertising. The site is assured to receive a huge amount of users and exposure. We will be cross promotion on all our websites, current and new one''s due out soon, to assure a wide variety and amount of exposure for all involved. We are just looking for more content and products to offer our userbase. We will provide the site, online promotion, and ordering capability. All you need to do is bring your product. We work with everyone individually, and will do our best to promote your site or game.

Involving the homeless is brilliant, IMHO. Negotiating the pay for a particular service being rendered is what it is supposed to be all about. You make the job offer, they decide whether to take the offer or not. If they keep up with their certificates they have guaranteed meals for a while, that they earned all by themselves.

i had a sign maker up the
street from my store make
a couple magnetic signs for
my jeep containing all of my urls.

i''ve also been using bold lettered bumper stickers.

this was cheap, effective advertising that got me
decent web traffic and visitors to the shop.

Well, I''ve got my folks wearing Yamisoft t-shirts. I wear mine as well, but since I program from home most of my waking hours, I may have to tape it to the window instead.

Perhaps it''d be a good idea to hand some out on a street corner one day, but then I''d go broke(r).

Could anyone tell me what a well-marketed game makes these days (per year)?
And how plausible is it to rely on a game marketing itslef? For example soldat, stick soldiers, I dont think they set out to be massive hits. Is that just luck?
And finally, what sort of money would people expect to pay for a game like soldat or SS?

Thanks!

Well, we only had enough made for the family, but I'm sure I could have more made if enough people were interested in buying them (I'd normally hand them out for free, but we'll need to release a few more games before we can do that).

The first version was just a nice white t-shirt with the Yamisoft logo across the front and www.yamisoft.com on the back - nothing flashy like the ones in my "free shirts I would only wear at the GDC" pile.

FYI, I don't have any pics yet, but the shirt logo is at http://www.yamisoft.com/yms_tshirt_logo.jpg
