It doesnt show the name of a device when it freezes, just that its scanning hardware.
I didnt remove anything from the kernel. I havent touched the kernel in any way. I just boot from the cd, choose config on the menu that comes up, and delete devices I dont own from the list. I also tried booting and leaving all devices selected and it still didnt work.

I always install from 2 Floppy disk (kernel,rootfs).
After than install from network, and never kernel stoped when boot (only 4 years ago, need manualy set params for NIC)
