Cel Shaded anime based game - WHY HASNT ANYONE THOUGHT OF THIS?!
This is the point where (being an anime fan and in college) I would like to say a few very nasty things to RDX. I''m sure there are lots of other people that feel the same way, so maybe this thread should be locked...
That was the response I was looking for! Hehe.
^^ The opinions above are the opinions of some deranged madman looking for the closing of this far off-topic thread. ^^
Teamshibi's post was not meant to insult or offend anyone. He was merely offering his OPINIONS and an IDEA to the rest of you. Instead some of you decided to be offended by his perspective on things and try to correct his thought. I'm sorry. That's not a mature way to deliver your view on him or his opinions. Why? His opinions are merely his opinions. How long would you argue with a Catholic priest that his God does not exist and that the Virgin Mary was not so much of a virgin? (Rhet. question)
Impossible, if you have AIM or ICQ, you can message me your "few very nasty things." I would like to hear them.

Cartoons are for kiddies.
*yawn*...as are Video Games.

I didn''t have anything particular in mind for the nasty things, but calling people that like to watch anime losers was a little out of line. MSW made a good point about videogames and animation (or cartoons) being for kids only, both can represent any kind of subject matter (with varying degrees of success.) Plenty of older people watch anime and cartoons like the Simpsons, just as plenty of older people play games.
I completely agree. I called people who watch anime losers? Really?
The Simpsons... hrm, what a horrible show it has become. Here''s the typical Simpsons show: One of the Simpsons does something bad. Bart and Lisa make prank phone calls to Moe''s. The end.
The main reason I dislike cartoons is that they''re unrealistic.

Am I the only person who hates cel-shading? I mean, animation studios don''t use cartoon-style art because it''s pretty; they use it because it''s necessary. There''s no other drawing style that can produce smooth animation, besides computer-generated renders. For backgrounds they often use watercolor paintings (Looney Tunes for example) and even static elements of the foreground. They only use solid colors with black outline for the stuff that needs to be animated, but it''s not pretty.
Cel-shading can look acceptable in 2D games, but in 3D, it really limits the amount of detail you can see. But either people really like it, or they think that just because it''s complicated to do in real-time, it must be good. Flat-shaded solid-color polygons can look quite good on models (like characters), and they look very cartoony, so thats certainly a good option. But cel-shading, where you minimize the contours and 3Dness of objects, looks really awful in my opinion.
Or maybe people just like it for the novelty, and will eventually get sick of it. I dunno. What''s so good about cel-shading?
This thread is also about anime. I don''t get what''s good about that either. In Japan, individuality is sort of frowned upon. Everyone is expected to fit in. This is shown in their artwork - the one place where you *don''t* want conformity. Yet they are all taught to draw the typical anime way - large eyes, childlike faces, polygonal hair, half-moon smiles, and 6 frames per second.

Cel shading is a stylistic thing, more detail is not necessarily better, but if you don''t like it you don''t like it. Not everything should be photorealistic though, personally I think a game rendered in painterly style would be pretty cool. There are also a bunch of NPR effects that don''t try to mimick a particular art style or technique.
About the conformity thing, a lot of anime has different art styles (even though there are usually similarities), in my opinion DBZ and Cowboy Bebop look different. The difference is style in between different types of manga and manga artists is even greater, I''d say the variety in style is about equal to the variety you see in relatively mainstream american comics.

I''m not saying games should be photorealistic; as I mentioned, a game with a lot of solid colors and maybe even flat shading can look quite good... cartoony, but that''s not a bad thing. But I do think that, in a 3D game, you want detail and contours.

RDX:
You say that anime are not extremely hard to draw ? I higly disagree, unless your a talented anime artist I suggest you think before posting stupidities.
You don;t like anime because they are unrealistic ? Maybe you didn''t know but nowadays anime aren''t the next pokemon or "kid" show but are more realisitc-oriented beautifully drawed shows with deeper stories than the next stupid american action-film suposed to be realistic. Anime can sometimes be more realistic than one of those idiotic films.
I''ve been trying to do anime art for more than 2 years, practicing everyday and believe me, It''s hard.
I don''t know if you watch the animes I watch but I do believe that they are not for "kiddies" since almost all of my animes are labelled "not under 18" (and it''s not porn or hentai). And the TV anime shows in america are displayed in the "Adult Swim" show which is diffused late at night on the cartoon network channel with a "not under 18 years old" message.
Sorry for being so rude but I couln''t resist "correcting" some thoughtless sayings.

And "reality" shows such as Survivor Thailand, Bachelorettes in Alaska, and Big Brother XVII are not? Well, I couldn''t tell you because I''ve never seen a "reality" show in my life. I somehow have this intution that tells me cartoons such as The Simpsons or Gundam Wing are more worth my while.
Sorry to intrude like this, but I really, really hate "reality" television.
