Illegal street racing idea
This past week, I must be on a streak of coming up with game ideas or something. My latest idea is an illegal street racing type thing. Where you have a budget (not very much might I add), and can buy cars with it. You would probably have to start out with something basic, like a Honda Civic. With a little money, you could either buy the Acura Integra''s engine, or pay someone to steal it. Either way you get it, you could make some adjustments and change the engines. You could also get a paint job if you wanted. You would buy various things for your car, such as spoilers, better tires, etc.
After finally have boughten (or stolen) your car, you could enter races. The skill level would go up with the prize money and the popularity of the race. It would often cost money to enter a race. The actual racing would be a bit different than you would think. Opponents would do whatever they can to stop you or someone else from getting ahead. This might include ramming, forcing off the track, maybe an explosion here or there
.
As a special feature, sometimes the track would be busted by the police, and everyone''s including your main objective changes from winning the race to destroying the police''s presence.
There would be a wide variety of tracks, opponents, and cars. So what do you think? Has this game already been done? Does it sound bland, and unfun? Or do you actually think it might be a fun game?
Thanks for your input!

Has this game already been done?
Tokyo Street Racer
Metropolis Street Racer
...with a twist. If you''re doing/suggesting it for fun, go for it. If you''re doing/suggesting it as a commercial project then there isn''t as much potential. It would sell, but unless you add something truly unique it would be just another copycat in a saturated market (I mean, how many different ways can you rehash OutRun and Ridge Racer?)
Dont forget one of the earliest coolest games of this type ever - Road Rash. So it''s a pretty old idea, but it''s not a bad idea to go with. When was the last time anyone played a truly original racing game?
Not that originality is a bad thing. Make sure you make it really interesting - let the player go off track some for shortcuts, have lots of different car modifications to let you really customize it, and make you repair it between racers. I dont think most people into racing games expect them to be original, only good.
Although a little originality is always nice.

Hey, Road Rash was completely different! You raced motorcycles!
(Completely tongue-in-cheek, of course

if you dont like racing games then sure they seem the same. different tracks and physics change the game quite a lot.
btw ridge racer was normal circut racing. tokyo racing was different since you actually raced an entire track and actually choose to race against opponents. you could decide to stick to slower cars or go gambling and racing faster cars.
things like ramming, explosions, etc are nice and all but try to be careful. you could go burnout style with traffic and its fun, but in normal serious racing its not fun at all and distracting. cars cant handle crashing like they show in some movies and many gams (ie gran tursimo). they are so light and crushable a swipe could lead to death.
you cant say its a good idea unless you actually start coming up with an implemnetation of how the gameplay will work. more details are needed. it could be done well, but terrible as well.

Have you played Midnight Club for the PS2? It''s got two great features: You can freely drive around a nicely modelled London or New York and get used to weaving in and out of traffic (as well as learn the map); and you can also catch up with NPC characters and challenge them to various races.
There are two types of races: head to head for pink slips (though you never lose YOUR car), and free for all waypoint races. As you''re racing, police spontaneously try to chase after you, ramming your car and messing up your chances of victory.
As you race the NPCs, you can aquire their cars. Each car has better stats in terms of handling, durability (vs. collisions), acceleration and top speed.
I''d actually like to see what you''re talking about applied to a game like Midnight Club. In a game where you can earn cash, I think it''d be cool to be able to acquire and upgrade a stable of cars. I also think that, depending on the type of race you choose, you should be able to either compete for prestige (which opens the door to more lucrative races) or compete for actual pink slips (where, if you lose, you have to give up your car).
As far as the last feature you mentioned (destroying police presence) how about making this a bit more like the old PS1 game Driver, where you had to lose police by ducking down alleyways?

You might want to check out the old computer games "Street Rod" and the sequel "Street Rod 2." They are based around street racing, but they''re set in the 50s, not the present, and the competitive aspect is focused mostly on staying on the road and going faster than the other guy - and also on tweaking and improving your car in the garage, which was done in a very entertaining fashion, where clicking on different areas would bring up some of the machinery there, which you could then mess with.

yes, "Street Rod" is superb. There''s nothing like getting an engine out of your car with your own hands instead just pushing a button![](wink.gif)
It is a lot of fun... everyone that haven''t played it, I encourage you to do so... while the racing part is v.poor comparing to current games, the way you could mess your car in garage still rules over everything I have seen.
And "Stunts".. gosh, where are those games now?
And yes - I still play "International Karate" - the second game I got on my Atari 800XL, like 15 years ago![](wink.gif)
Damn, went heavily off subject, sorry.. I just had to mention those

Ah, I can see this going many ideas as I had a similar one. Think, Test drive (new one for ps2) in a fully persistant online world. Cops would have fast cars, races would be scheduled or spurt of the moment, can drive all around the city, etc. It would support both kinds of street racing cars. Classics (ah, mustang with 1100hp!!!!!!!!) or little Jap comuter cars (civic... eww....) You could eventually start clubs and mark tracks via grafiti. If someone tries to race there the club can allow them for a fee or tell them to go away. Anyway its a great idea.
i dont know if someone posted this, cause i didnt read the replies, but an interetsing twist that you could put on it is: you have an online feature, you race with the car you have customly made in the career mode. There would be different modes like street race, time trail ect.. but the interesting one would be the pink slip form, if you win you get there car, or parts off of it w/e. this idea may suck but it just poppped in my head ;-)
"NO, NO NOT THE MONKEYS!!!! AHHHHHHH!"
