My favorite basic games are 66 (like Pinachle but with half the cards, anyone else ever heard of this, I think it's a Pittsburgh thing?), Poker, and Eucher.
Also, a great large group (5 or more) game is Bullshit.

Some of my fave card games are:
Big 2 (sometimes called President): I''m surprised no one mentioned this! Lots of ppl play this at my school. Basicly, you play with 4 ppl and deal 13 cards (52/4 = 13) to each player. The player with diamond 3 starts the game by putting it down. The person starting can go singles, doubles, triples or put down a poker hand. than the next player has to play a higher single/double/triple/poker hand (3 is lowest, 2 is highest) depending on what first person started with. It goes around with everyone putting down higher cards. You can decide to pass if you watn to save ur cards or if you can''t beat it. It''s really strategic and some people can gamble by having the winner getting the a certain amount of money for each card left in the losers'' hand. Kind of complicated game though to explain properly without seeing someone play it first.
Speed: Like Sandman said, this game is really fun to play with 2ppl.
Crazy 8: the classic card game. was one of the first game i learned although there are a lot of variations to this game.
Signal: everyone has a partner and everyone starts with 4 cards. Someone then deals out 4 cards in the middle and ppl can switch cards in their hands for any cards in the middle. The point is to get 4 of a kind and then do some secret signal to their partner. Than their partner has to call out "signal". The other players can call "block" if they think their opponent is doing a signal but if they guessed wrong, then they lose. I guess it would be hard to make this into a computer game though.
Black queen: a game i usually play when i''m bored. I''m not up to explaining this though. if someone doesn''t know how to play this then i''ll explain later.
