I want your opinion

Hello, Right now i have an idea (and a fairly well-completed design document) for a game i would like to make, and i would like all of you to give me your opinions on the idea and premise behind the game. The game will be multiplayer only, and free. I have already found several engines to use 4 free, just have to decide which will serve the purposes best. The game itself will be based on drug-dealing. Yes, i know, Politically incorrect, but then again, it makes a fun game. It will be a FPS, in which scores will be based on how much money you make, not how many times you can frag a person. It will be an extrapilation off of Dope-Wars, adding a more interactive feel to it. Weapons can be shown on screen, and users can battle eachother for territory, money, and more. The Weapons will be realistic, and no huge weapons either, biggest weapon is an SMG. Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions? I am open to anything, as this an idea. Feel free to post anything pretaining to the subject matter. Thanks, Nquiksilver [edited by - Nquiksilver on July 17, 2002 4:10:39 PM] [edited by - Nquiksilver on July 17, 2002 4:11:03 PM]

More or less, it sounds like GTA3, with drugs. I think it''s been done enough, and done well enough.

I would stick with something more original. Otherwise, you''d be competing against strong titles like GTA3, and titles that already have a fan base (Drug Wars).

Actually, it sounds like you''re trying to merge aspects of Counter-Strike ( <- i hate that game ), GTA3, and Drug Wars. In CS, you kill, and you get money for better weapons.

Not to be rude, but you''d be trying to merge the unique parts of different games into some odd mix, and since you don''t have the financial backing or large staff that the developing companies had, it has the chance of being very unplayable. This is just speculation, of course.

Personally, I only play top of the line FPS''s. An FPS is a hard genre to do something good in. If an FPS is crappy, and tries to incorporate features over function, it''s unplayable.

If your heart is really set on this type of game, I''d go for a 3rd person view, but even then, what would someone want to play; a game like Grand Theft Auto 3, or yours? (wow, I''m being an ass, sorry heh)..

Just trying to give an honest opinion.

It''s ok, this is a good opinion.

Now, you said that i am trying to merge a part of CS? Well, the only part if at all is the money used to buy weapons, after all, this is a reality based game. I understand about GTA3, but i think it goes like this:

A user spawns in a map made to look like NYC. He interacts with ppl, trying to sell them drugs to make money. He has to run from the cops, other dealers, and score is based only on how much $$ you make. Weapons only add a level of FPS to the mix, trying to compete against the cops and other dealers with weapons might be fun. But then again, good views.

I think it would work well as a mod. I don''t think you''re trying to rip off CS or GTA3 or even dope wars and I think the game has potential to be fun. Go for first person, make it a mod for a popular game (like Q3A or HL) and everything will be good.
I can see similarities to GTA3 but it gives a trading element that GTA3 doesn''t have. The game wouldn''t really need a lot of persistence (most NPC''s just sorta appear and disappear) and probably wouldn''t be too hard to implement. Sounds feasable and fun. So when do we get to play it? =)

Hey guys, thanks for the positive input. Well, since HL is becoming quite outdated, i am going to use a free engine. Hence, any person can play, there is no outside game required. I''ll post more about it soon, any more thoughts and/or comments? Again, thanks

Well, the reason I suggested HL is because you have a good chance of getting a lot of people playing your game. Chances are that if you use a free engine less people will play. Q3A isn''t outdated you may want to try that.
On the contrary, there are so many HL mods, many are barely played. a free engine reaches a lot of ppl, and it will almost look as good as HL with the limitations :D :D
Thanks,Nquiksilver
There are a lot of games period and a lot of them get played by only a few people. It was only a suggestion. The main reason why I''m suggesting this isn''t because of graphics engine limitations, it''s because Q3A or UT, or whatever (we''ll forget HL) have a lot of servers already running. I''m not sure what free engine you''re using though (Crystal Space, Genesis 3D?) so you may have a good way for people to browse for servers built in.
I think this is a really fun sounding idea. If you concentrate on the "fun" aspects of it, rather than trying to rival the technology of Doom III, I bet you could create an underground hit and make a decent bit of cash on it.
