what is artifical intelligence?
I''n now studing artifical intelligence. However, there are too many definitions about artifical intelligence. Could you please figure out what are the most important issues about AI? Just for general concept understanding.
Thank you!
Are you referring to Game AI, or AI as studied in academia?
In either case, no one person is going to be able to give you the correct answer as to the ''definition'' of AI, since it varies depending on the perspective of the person. My perspective overlaps commercial, academic, philosophical and game AI - so in that respect its fairly broad - and yet it would still not encompass enough so that my opinion is the right one!
My only advice is to read and learn as much as you can about all sorts of AI principles and practices and then make up your own mind about what AI really is!
If you''re not satisfied with that, then consider these two possible definitions.
AI is about:
a) understanding cognition; and/or,
b) replicating cognition.
There are lots of other definitions that are almost all equally valid.
I hope you enjoy your search for the answer!
Cheers,
Timkin

Artificial intelligence as a science:
A.I. is the science that tries to simulate the processes of the brain(human or whatever) with the help of the computer systems and digital technology.

Hi, my first post as I've been a reader of the forums, until now
My guess is for A.I. to be Intelligent it would have to be instinctive at recognising the 'small facts' of a situation, these would out-weigh the 'bigger picture' which would otherwise have been used to make the final decision.
hope that helps see things from an outsiders point of view...perhaps I should do some more research?

The difficulty in defining AI stems mostly from the difficulty in defining "intelligence", so you might want to start there.
After studying AI at uni I would say AI is the science of creating programs which can solve problems.
So what sort of problem is a "chat bot" solving? (To implement it the programmer must solve problems, but the program itself is solving nothing, merely responding in an intelligent way).

As far as chat bots go... there always have been ''black box'' tests for ''communicating'' AIs... a terminal is put up in one room, connected to another terminal in another room. A test person is put in front of one terminal, and either another test person or an AI on the other terminal. If a test subject talking to an AI can figure out that it is an AI, then they consider the test failed
In other words, a good AI would be, according to this test, a system, of which you couldn''t, except by physical means(appearance), tell if it''s an AI or a person.

Generally speaking?
