RPG makers, what do all of you guys and girls think about them? Personaly, i think it''s cheating... and they very often they s*ck. you cant do what you want with them etc... well, i just want to start a discussion... =) (if you dont know what they are goto http://www.rpgmaker.net/)

They allow someone who has no or little programming experience to tell their story. Should the making of new and fun games be limited to programmers? I know that when I play a game, I don''t mind that the map wasn''t done by a programmer (the engine was, but the world wasn''t.) An analogy: should everyone who plays AD+D in real life have to invent their own rules for character creation and combat before playing?

For those who want to move onto ''real'' programming later, it has several benefits. It familiarizes them with the production of the sound, graphics, and music assets. It teaches them that such games are often done with a tile-based system. It shows one way how to set properties on a character or object. If there is scripting or programming involved, that obviously familiarises them with variables, control structures, etc.

I think they are a handy tool.

All of them? RPGS are extremely hard projects if you are developping typical RPG (Fallout) Firstly, everybody has different opinion about combat system, other wants to add his own rules and another is thinking that we should change this to futuristic one from fantasy. Secondly, without good Desing Doc or lists what everyone does its completely chaos if you have more than 2 makers. Of course there are some stupid klick&play machines which barely work...

Time comes, time goes and I only am.
Most of the RPG makers on that sight uses the "unrealistic" kind of battle system... sort of Final Fantasy 1-6...

but hey, if thats the kind of game your looking to make, then these progs. might be good!

btw. i think FF1-8 are great games! (no. 8 isnt THAT good, hate the characters...)

Hell, most RPGs use unrealistic combat systems! In AD+D a Level 9 warrior can take numerous clear sword blows before dying. I think too much realism would remove the benefits of advancing your character, which is an integral part of the RPG concept.
Actually according to the AD+D rules, an undefended blow should automatically kill a (demi)human no matter what the level of the character. That rule is usually invoked when a character who is the victim of a Hold Person is struck.

I onced talked with Gygax and he said that increased hit points were more of an indication of a character''s ability to reduce damage taken than actual damage absorbtion. Of course that statement is contradictatory with other rules in AD+D, but no one ever claimed it was a very coherent system. (Yes, I was a real nerdy nerd in high school.)

Baldurs gate uses AD&D system, right?
I cant remember killing in one blow...
Maybe in the earlier AD&D games... i dont know, havent played them that much...

Have you ever played Jagged Alience 2? (not sure about the spelling)

in that rpg/turnbased strategy they base everything on skills, if your fast and accurate etc. you live... or else you die (doh)

and that game KICKS ASS!!!

But i didnt say that i didnt like "unrealistic" games, or that system...

btw. most RPGmakers uses a fanatsy type world/interface/skills etc... not good if u wanna make a fallout like game (future or post-disaster)

RPGs allow you to tell your own story with your own set of rules(or others that you prefer )
To get one up and running you have to work the full gamut of programming: file-handling, AI, animation, database-handling, and GUI stuff.
Definitely not for beginners but if you''ve had some experience and are methodical you can build something bigger than just the code.

Well, I never said undefended. Nor did I mention specific spells. A high level fighter in battle with a few kobolds would last way too long. Except where some obscure special-case rule would take effect.

And doesn''t a mace do more damage than a dagger under the standard rules? I forget. Either way, AD+D rules are a mess of tacked-together special cases and counter-intuitive systems. (Many of which are being fixed in 3rd Edition, I admit.) They can still be the basis of fun battles, but realistic they are not I prefer the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay combat rules if you want players to actually fear for their lives.
Your arguments suck if you are talking about realistic battle system????? As long as there are mages that can throw spells and animate dead, don''t come to here tell how unrealistic they are! I''m glad that these games aren''t realistic otherwise rpgs would suck(Imagine playing Baldur''s Gate/AD&D without mages), and that would suck, too!
