DirectX Installation problem?
I''m not referring to the SDK right now, I mean DirectX itself. I''ve tried installing DirectX 8.1 off of Microsoft''s download, and off of games. Yet every time I install them, the DirectX properties listed in the control panel insist I have DirectX 8.0 for everything BUT Direct3d, which is apparently version 7.0
"DirectX 8.0 is installed
Direct3D Version 4.07.00.0700 DirectX 7.0
DirectDraw Version 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8.0
DirectInput Version 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8.0
DirectMusic Version 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8.0
DirectPlay Version 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8.0
DirectSound Version 4.08.01.0881 DirectX 8.0"
What''s the deal? Is this something minor, or is something wrong? I am experiencing problems with DirectX 8 games that use the Direct3D HAL, and I''m wondering if it''s this that''s causing the problems.

what os are you running?
open dxdiag on dlls page and try deleting all files that have 4.07 as their version. tren windows file protection might kick in and try to restore some known versions of the files. if you have an option, prevent it from doing so. then reinstall dx.

I''m running Windows 98...
Is there an easy way to disable that file protection so I CAN delete them? It doesn''t look that way...

win98 doesn''t have file protection. which files are v.7? which errors do you get if you try to delete them? close all programs before deleting. use ctl-alt-del as well.

It just wouldn''t let me delete the files, claiming windows was using them. To solve it, I simply went into DOS and fried them all there. I reinstalled DirectX, and it seems to be the same thing. What files are old? These:
ddraw16.dll 4.07.00.0700
ddraw.vxd 4.07.00.0700
d3dim.dll 4.07.00.0700
d3dramp.dll 4.07.00.0700
d3drm.dll 4.06.02.0436
d3dpmesh.dll 4.06.02.0436
gameenum.sys 4.07.00.0700
hidgame.sys 4.07.00.0700
mfc40.dll 4.01.00.6140
... and past that point a bunch of ones with
numbers like "amstream.dll 6.03.01.0881",
but I get the impression those aren''t necessarily the same deal..

then what you''re seeing may as well be normal. those files refer to features that don''t exist in dx8: ddraw, retained mode. since dx8 doesn''t support them, it doesn''t update the respective files either.
