The idea is forming but.....

I am stuck with 'what then'... I can say I want to make a game like 'Toss the turtle', 'jetpack joyride' 'earn to die' etc but I'm stuck with the next bit... I can break down these games, figure out ideas for how they're made. Spend time making them but I'm not going to just copy them.. So whilst forming the idea, Lets say you throw an object, it goes 50m, then what? Add in upgrades, they all got upgrades, nothing new... I believe the realm of possibility when it comes to making a game is as big or small as your mind... I'm being very small minded lately -.-.......

My intention is to start something new after new year... So I've got a month to 'figure it out'... I like the idea of a physics game, a 'launcher game', but then what... I don't know if just another copy of something is a great use of time... Yeah I still need to show my ability to make games but if I spend the whole year just making something that already exists with different images and colors and whatever technical differences there are... It's still the same. I really wish one of these days I'll have my "aha!" moment -.-... I don't fancy going to a park and staring blankly at the trees for motivation/ideas is really going to cut it for me! So I've been attempting to think of things I've enjoyed playing that are 'small' and I used to spend a lot of time on Kongregate so I'm going there for ideas but I don't wanna rip anyone off so I want to try adding some original flavor to the mix but I don't have anything right now.....

So the idea of experimenting by mixing two types of games together... I don't know.. I bet if I can think of it, someone else already has but it doesn't stop me trying! In this launcher kind of game, I wonder what really could be changed anyway... Could you throw a military tank across a city and have it bounce off skyscrapers and come to a halt at a seagull just because? "WTF" is a fun target to aim for sometimes.. Just make people really doubt reality when they play your game BUT if its still just the same... Throw a tank and have it bounce off skyscrapers with the ability to shoot once or twice for a boost? Writing that reminded me that in Toss the turtle you have some slingshot thing where you get a tiny boost by firing upto 3 rocks at the turtle -.- The idea already exists! Dang it. I'm really fixing to read through the game design section of the forum, see if I can find any cool discussions about ideas.

At the end of everything, I'm going to 'just make' whatever I can... Its not like I'm trying to go for profit, I'm more fixing to demonstrate skill... I don't remember where i read it but I read somewhere that someone said "To be a programmer is to be a problem solved, if you can't solve a problem you can't be a programmer" it was on a forum.. maybe they stole the quote too I don't know but I like it. It makes me feel cool when i'm trying to figure stuff out.... But does this really mark the beginning of Day 1 of no ideas, Still no ideas, Day 2 of no ideas, Still no ideas, ? nah I got ideas but you know...

I need to find out my skills limits first before I start trying to find out what people wanna play... Which is why I'm going for the build this build this, ask people for help in regards to this and learn from it type of thing. I imagine myself doing this for quite a while :D

What you are describing is a designers job. Later on in your text you inform us that you are a programmer. Those are two very different things. Designers think of gameplay and the implementation of gameplay, programmers think of how to make the game work in terms of efficiency, stability and function.

Its perfectly fine to be 'just a programmer' and just practice using games that already exist. There are people who do both designing and programming, but they are usually better at one or the other.

About all ideas being similar; its also a matter of opinion. People always seek patterns in things based on similarities. Games with strategy in them are strategy games, games with sports in them are sports games, games with both can be seen as both a sport and a strategy game. All FPS games have in common that its a shooter, so they are all using 'ideas' that have already been done before. Just look at the battle royale genre. Its relatively new and at first there were only a few games in that category, but as developers made more and more battle royale games it became a genre of its own. There is no shame in doing something that has been done before or that is based on ideas of others. Every now and then a truly original idea comes along, but you can bet that that idea is also based on something else or at least evolved from something else. TLDR: dont worry about making stuff that has already been done before, just try to find a way to make it a bit more unique, efficient, better looking or just better in some other area.

That being said, I feel like the idea you are struggling with is creativity. Some people just arent creative and should accept this about themselves and focus on other areas. However, if you do want to 'force destiny' and change your skillset (or just become better at something you feel isnt good enough about you yet), then I suggest to just look at other games. Analyze what makes them fun. Write those things down and see if you can combine a few. Or just play games and every time you think 'oh its  a shame i cant do this or that in this game' or 'you know what a good addition to this game would be?' then you write that down. Then you can make a similar game but with the thing that you felt was lacking included and you will have made something that other people might also think was lacking, increasing your chances of succes.

And if all else fails you can always try mushrooms or brainstorm with friends :D Good luck!

I think that I learned for myself is that don't try to make things that other people might like. Sure if you want to make money this is important, but the most important thing should always be that YOU like your game. If you don't have fun playing your own game it is not worth your time. Furthermore, you should not care too much if a game is very similar to another game. A lot of times those little details that distinguish your game from others come during development.

Since I am a programmer myself and often struggle with creativity I know your problem. For me playing a lot of different games helps with finding new ideas. Combining already existing genres is another thing I currently really like to do. I believe that there are still a lot of possibilities that the world has not seen yet.

All in all, I think there is no easy solution to fix such a problem. If you find no ideas at all for a new project idea, it sometimes is the best to forget about this idea and try to find a different one. Another idea would be to simply start prototyping. Just try to copy the basic game mechanics from an already existing game. Find out if you really like the idea and if you are having fun with the project. If that is the case, finding new additions for your project should not be a problem. But maybe you find out that you don't even like to work on that specific project idea.

Sorry if this is a little bit out of order. Wrote this on my way home. :D

Good luck with your project!

Thanks, I wonder what'd be easier to find, Mushrooms or Friends ?

Yeah i'm more of the builder than designer guy. I find it sucks sometimes because I want to make cool things and even when I find a ton of totally free to use assets I get hyped and then I get stuck when figuring out designy stuff ? I might post on the hobby section again and see how things roll that way. I'm not like completely brain dead or anything but I'm aware my creativity needs a boost sometimes.

Its all good! :) Thank you for responding.

I agree about the making money part. Like maybe one day that's possible but right now its not a primary focus. But I sometimes then get worried like if I was ever to say I'm a programmer.. Could I point them to anything nice I've made? I've definitely gotta like what I make! I think I'm just going to roll with it. Like I wrote about throwing a tank but I don't think I'd do that but I can throw a square and make something happen and then take it from there and when I am completely out of ideas I'll complain lots online and hope someone feeds the idea jar :joy: or attempt to make friends with people. That too could work.

As for the ideas being the same part of it.. I didn't really look at it like that, all these games are the same already!! ? Yeahh I feel better already! ?

I think it is definitely possible to show your skills without any skills in art stuff. I once wrote a simple but pretty fun game in Unity with a lot of physics stuff with only one single sprite (a 1x1 white pixel actually :D ). You don't need good graphics for fun gameplay. There are tons of fun games out there that prove this.

I agree with you. Simply start working on your idea and see what happens. Maybe an artist will see your progress here and would love to help you with graphics. :) These projects are never a waste of time. You always learn something from them. If there would be a pointer where I could see how many Unity projects I have created and deleted a couple of days later, that counter would probably be already in triple digits. But I don't think that a single one of them was a waste of time. :)

Even considering that you may have spent at least 200 days doing 'something' only to delete it? Dannggg, I've looked at this all wrong for so long ? I'm used to working in a way where things need to get done, there's your goal, meet it, deleting something, changing your mind on something, its out of the question ? The old ways need to go and I'll just wing it. I mean hmm what happens if you launch a gorilla out of a cannon ? or a small ninja person..... or or or... I'm just going to mess around now and as long as its not totally stupid or lame I'll be happy. Even if I can get one to find it funny or cool or weird, goal met! lol

I'm glad I didn't see a WoW like MMORPG with over 100000 quests in there! :D haha!
