I posted this question before but deleted it before I got any responses because I started trying other things I thought I could get to work, and didn''t want to waste people''s time. But those things didn''t work (fdisk, parted). So I''m gonna try asking again. So I''m trying to dual boot Red Hat and Win98 Following the Red Hat documentation, I ran scandisk and defragmented my c: drive. I then tried to use fips. It said that my fat''s are not identical and closed. So I attempted to run chkdsk /f which led me to scandisk. Which I ran once again without any errors. So I decided to format. And I did. I reinstalled windows and went through the steps over again and I still had the same error message. I also ran norton disk doctor more than once somewhere in there, with no errors. So I''m just very confused. I can''t fix this error cause both scandisk and norton disk doctor aren''t finding it. Anyone know how to make my FAT''s identical?? Here are some ideas:

• Fips is not the greatest hard-drive splitter though it worked ok for me. I highly suggest reading fips.doc and fips.faq (not the Red Hat documentation since that may be outdated or poorly constructed) as well as possibly e-mail the developer of fips if you can''t get it to work.


• Another good free hard-drive splitter is the one in the install of Mandrake. Just click until you get to there and change what you want then save and exit (I''m sure there are others).


• I think fips is OSS so you could grep through the source code searching for a message like "fats are not identical." I assume you know how to program, so you may be able to decipher to problem there (One great thing I like about OSS; you can fix it yourself).


• Get a seperate hard drive to install linux on a decent 6gb hd is really cheap nowadays.


• Search google

Just so you don't think I'm too lazy.
I read the documentation extensively before I posted. I would buy a new hard drive, but my computer only has room for one, and I searched google, microsoft's site, and this site, a lot, and cannot seem to find an answer.

So I tried out mandrake, and that installation seems very nice, the problem I ended up having, was the same exact one I had with fips, it said my FAT's don't match up and the mandrake installation exited.

So I think my only choice is to make my FAT's identical. I'm going to continue searching the web to find out how to do this, but meanwhile if someone knows the answer I would be very grateful.

it seems you''re not opposed to reinstalling windows... so why don''t you use fdisk from linux to delete all your partitions, and create the linux partition that way, and just leave room for the windows one by not using up all the space

If you really want to get some info on how to use a linux program, visit linux web sites... ie: Linux.com, Linux.org, etc... That''s all you need to do. Also, as stated by somebody already, try to e-mail the creator of fips...

If you want to fix your fats, one way would be to delete the second one, NOT the first one using tools you should be able to find over the net somewhere and it will recreate the copy for you. But that would only work if you''re using FAT16 and not FAT32.

I wish I could help more but I can''t say I ever ran into that
prob. I''ve run Mandrake and RH without that issue. I did have
probs with the older RH''s graphical drive manager and had to
use more advanced one. However that dosn''t help you any. When
I set the thing up I wiped my drive clean wich it sound like
you are willing to do. Then used good old fdisk to partition
the drive. I set up the one for windows and then two I think
for linux. You need to make sure you have the swap drive acounted
for. I just can''t remember if I did that part later. I didn''t
bother formating the linux parts because it will do that later
when you pick your mount point and file system types. The size
difference didn''t matter and shouldn''t so thats an odd thing.
the only thing was you need to make sure the swap drive is in
correct perportion to your main linux partition. This may not
have any new info but its all I did and everything installed fine.
