You could also try tic-tac-toe. Not only can you delve into a bit of graphics, but you can also write an effective sort of AI with a little more effort.

Text RPGs can be a lot of fun, and easy too, if you''re in to that kind of thing.

I suggest some sort of text based puzzle game. The first one I can think of is a number guessing game.

I was reading that the best games to start off with are:
1) Tetris
2) Breakout
3) Pac-Man
4) Mario Bros.

I read it in one of the articles on this site called, How do I Make Games? A Path to Game Development. It''s a really good article, in my opinion.
