I went to the FreeBSD web site (www.freebsd.com) and checked it out. It looks very interesting and if I have problems with RH I will definately check it out. One thing I wasn't sure about. Is FreeBSD a version of Linux or Unix? I know they are all similar and it really isn't important, just wondering...

It''s a version of Unix. Quite a good one, I might add
ReactOS - an Open-source operating system compatible with Windows NT apps and drivers
I bought FreeBSD 4.1 (I know it''s an old release :9) and have been toying with it lately. It''s very fun and interesting. Look into it.

Just out of my own ignorance, what is the benefit of Slackware or Debian over the other Linux distros? Can they do something the others can''t or is it just personal preference?

All distros do basicly the same thing, the reason some people prefer Slack or Deb to any other distro is that it lets you do things the way you want, I remember using one of the first( I think it was version 2something) Slackware dist available and you had to configure everything manually, it''s a great way to learn( and at that time, I didn''t know jack about Linux, It took me 2 or 3 days to understand that in order to install I had to create disks using rawrite and another 2 days to figure how rawrite worked. Heck, I''ve learned more from that distro than with any others, that''s why in some of the distro threads here, you may have seen me tell newbs that if they really want to learn the system, they should get Slackware. But that''s just my point of vue.
Slackware is your friend... Although, I myself grew found of Gentoo which allows you to custom build your Linux distro and their import function is pretty cool no deps to be taken care of as it downloads them before downloading the app you want to install. I don''t recommend if for newbs though as you need to know a bit of how the system works in order to be able to create your own distro but I got mine to work with a minimal kernel in about 2 hours( with kernel compilations and all )...
Anyhow, these are my views on the distro subject. Hope it clarifies a bit for you. In the end it come down to choose a distro you think can help you learn the most.
For more info on the hundreds of Linux distros availlable check out: DistroWatch the best place to get information any distro that is still being worked on. There are more than people think.

Honestly, I think the only problem with BSD as opposed to Linux is that many of the games that you can buy (e.g., Quake III, etc.) are made to work with the Linux kernel, and I doubt you could get it to work on BSD since you only have binaries... For that reason alone, I will NEVER use BSD on my primary desktop. It''s great for everything else, though. Plus, the BSD daemon can kick Tux''s ass any day

lol Now wouldn''t that be a game! Not sure what you could use to represent M$ and MAC but it would be comical.

Actually, I had come up with this game I was going to make a while ago called GNUWarrior. It was going to be a platform shooter, and you could choose to be the BSD Daemon, Tux, the GNU thing (whatever it is), and the GIMP guy. Never did start coding it though.

hahahhaa, now that sounds like a game! I would play it as long as there were explosions! Oh and fire!, Lots of fire.
