Just wanted to chime in on RH 7.3 I just finished installing it (replaced Mandrake 8.1) and it was flawless. The setup detected all of my hardware including my cable connection and set everything up perfectly. If anyone is looking for a dist to check out I would look at that one. Happy coding! GRELLIN

Personally, I prefere Slackware. But hey, whatever floats your boat
ReactOS - an Open-source operating system compatible with Windows NT apps and drivers
Yeah, as far as linux goes, Slackware and Debian are the best, without question. I think Debian edges out Slack, though, because of the 1337ness of apt-get.

Then if you wanna talk about BSD... FreeBSD is 0wn!

rm -rf /bin/laden
Just out of my own ignorance, what is the benefit of Slackware or Debian over the other Linux distros? Can they do something the others can''t or is it just personal preference?

Generally personal preference. Being two of the oldest and most established Linux distros doesn''t hurt, and the love story behind the name "Debian" (they''re married now, with at least one kid) is a nice touch. Just wish the distro (Deb) was a little more user-friendly.
Debian has a better packaging system, from what I''ve heard. I don''t like Redhat because upgrading from something like 7.0 to 7.2 is an exercise in frustration. Yeah, I know I could just download the whole thing and do an "upgrade" installation, but that seems like a lot more effort than it should be.

Debian all the way - most difficult part in the setup for me was my scanner (UMAX Astra 1220P), being a parallel port scanner it required a patch to the sane scanner source code. 5 minutes later and I could scan with the gimp.
