Game engines
Hey all,
I have a nice little concept for a game, and i am wondering what engine is best to use for a Free game development. In other words, what would be the best free engine to use? The game will be a FPS, (conceptual, mind you) so any recommendations?
Thanks,Nquiksilver

Ok, (this is all in my mind as of yet, so i appreciate feedback of all sorts) I have lots of ideas for FPS, but one that my friend liked was a tron-type game (tron being an old movie i''m sure most of you have heard of) that based a FPS inside your computer, or any computer. Gameplay modes, teams, etc. all can be divided up, with a neat array of weapons. However, the engine i hope to use will need to be free, and will need some nice effects, or be able to power good particle effects. Any more suggestions/feedback?
Thanks,Nquiksilver
Are you planning to sell your game? If not Crystal Space is worth a look. It''s open source, pretty complete and very well documented. Otherwise the Tribes 2 engine is pretty good ($100 per programmer).

Hate to break your bubble but they are coming out with a FPS game based off of Tron and it looks pretty good!
My programming team are currently using the Truevision 3D engine, which they inform me is both good and free.
However, I suspect the real reason is because it''s the only one they could find that uses VB, rather than C.
But already it fails to meet my design. Perhaps someone here could make a few suggestions to my three biggest problems:
1. We need to find a way of merging BSP and heightfield terrain so you can walk, as directly as possible, between structures and landscapes.
2. We need a way of making large caverns, that simply cannot be made well by any BSP editor. The easiest way should be to tweak the terrain engine so you''ve got one terrain forming the floor, and another the roof.
3. Several sections of the game will involve vehicles that are so big (eg airships) that they can only be made with BSP, however, they must be capable of free movement over other BSP and terrain based areas.
Any suggestions?

Well, i have heard of the tron game, and althought it's in dev by Disney if i am correct (and they hired another studio) I would still like to make a tron-type of game while updating the game and simply using the concept of a battlefield inside a computer. Also, this Crystal Space engine? URL? (I would love some linkage :D) thanks guys
