I have recently seen this phrase in a review of a book about evolutionary programming and machine learning. Anyone here know what it means?

Anything to do with artificial immune systems?

my first thought was the practice of setting up a gene set as permanent in your pool. normally you spawn successors from the parents then everyone dies. this causes full mutation of your pool. however if you want some consistancy you could tweak a few sets for behavior by hand; making sure they get reintroduced into the pull.
sounds good on paper by GA is a gradient search over an abstract space with pretty fast convergence. screwing up the gradient search by adding in what you think is good prolly wont have the desired results.
didnt post cause ive never heard the term before.

It''s mentioned in one of the reader reviews of this book.

It may be a phrase made up by the author to describe something we are already aware of. Can''t imagine what it could be though. I''m just surprised I''ve never come across it amongst the piles of literature on the subject I read.

I have heard the phrase used before, but I cannot be too certain of the context or the content related to it.
I seem to recall some work done on artificial immune systems... essentially a case study of an adaptive system with memory. That seems to fit with the links to evolutionary programming and ML that you mentioned fup.
I would be very interested to hear anything more you find out about this topic.
Cheers,
Timkin

I think this is called ''elitism'' and helps when you''re going more for exploitation than exploration of the search space.
