depth buffer

ok heres the prob.... i have a number of nice space ship models loaded in, displaying fine. but... if they go too far away from the camera they disappear into the inky black. i''m wondering how deep the depth buffer is exactly and how i can make it deeper... or am i doing stuff completly wrong? :\
they get clipped away by the far clippingplane, wich you set in the gluPerspective for example (and, if you''re in space, don''t set the near clipplane to something lower than 1, just because of precision-issues..)

And if gluPerspective won''t do the trick you can always adjust the scale of all the models to make the entire game smaller
