Hmmm.. special effect weapons. How about an auto-multitargeting laser bomb? It''d look like a death-ray disco ball. Also sidewinders with dynamic arc modification would be cool; you could go into slo-mo and then work out which trajectory would hit the most targets.
Would weapons with drawbacks be interesting? Eg. shrapnel, ricochets.

Now THATS an idea. I like it. Forget weapon drawbacks. The draw back will be handled through energy drain and number of times you''re able to fire.

But some shots can "tease" the player too. Like a large missile that explodes, sends out three shards to a distance that pause before they fly at the player''s ship. (The player can''t maneuver along those three lines to avoid the shots, so they will have to accommodate with all the other kamikaze ships flying around the screen! And when the missile shows up, the player knows he''s in trouble)

We currently use rockets to send objects into orbit and beyond, so everyone with the barest modicum of awareness of current space endavors knows that rocket-based technology can get the job done. How efficiently the job gets done is another matter altogether.
Consider the size of rockets relative to their payload. Agreed, most of that is necessary merely to escape the earth''s gravitational pull, however it turns out that it''s a balance between the actual thrust provided by the rockets and the extremely low environmental friction due to space. That''s all fine and dandy - when you''re talking about a huge shuttle-sized structure, but for a small missile the system becomes inefficient (more fuel needs to be carried to achieve any useful range, which limits the effective payload).
Just clarifying my point. Great ideas all round.
Of course, realism should always come second (or third, or fourth) to fun, fun, fun! If having missiles and huge explosions that logically could only occur in the presence of oxygen make the game more fun, screw realism!
Zerowing has a tractor beam that''s pretty cool. It let''s you use enemies as a shield.
How about 2-stage weapons? Like a small round thing can be shot out he front slowly and when fire is pressed again, it creates a thin wall of fire or something and disappears. Or how about a rope thing that you can shoot at ships and grab on and when you move your ship around you can swing them around your ship into other ships or a wall or something, on second thought, that may be a bit hard to use. How about bouncy armor? Puts the rubber-like stuff around you that whenever you run into something that isn''t innately dangerous (like a wall or the ground) instead of instant death (which is really annoying), it sends you flying in some direction, not exactly safe like but at least your not dead (until you hit an enemy missile or ship). What about the ability to play dead? Something that lets you turn off your ship and it can no longer be hit by enemy fire or ships, but can still hit walls and stuff? This would have to be something that happens only briefly but would come in really handy if there are nine hundred and forty trillion ships and lasers zooming around and you have nowhere to go. Just some thoughts, good luck.
