A few questions on servers...
1) What is a good server to buy?
2) How do you set up a domain using them? I know this is possible!!!!
NOTE: I want to run my server from a seperate server machine I''m going to buy( I know the prices )
1) What is a good server to buy?
We need more information for this one, what is the server to do?, how many hits/connections do you expect it to get per day?
2) How do you set up a domain using them? I know this is possible!!!!
Your server would need a static IP from your ISP for a start, then you would need to register a domain (www.ns.com do it for $14), and use a free DNS server such as zoneedit.com to point the domain to your server.
Hope that helps.

Ok... I guess I''m going to have to wait on question number 1 lol
My games probably going to be deserted when it comes out anyways(I hope not though!!)
anyways... How come places that give domain names can keep creating more but claim it is their own? I don''t really get that zoneedit.com place... I''ll keep looking around at it though...
But I want to know how domain hosters give you a website and store it on their computers?

There are ways to set up your name server to redirect to a dynamic IP address, but it''s not really worth the effort if you ask me. Just pay the $15-20/month to get your site hosted.
As for your domain name, go buy it... it''s only like $60 for 3 years at network solutions/internic right now.

Netsol is evil and a huge waste of money. Go to Register.com or Dotster.com instead.

I registered my domain through http://www.inexpensivedomains.com/
It''s $15 a year with them, and they can host DNS for you or you can host it yourself.

If I got that and I bought this:
http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/products/series_pedge_pedsc_servers.htm
I would get the PowerEdge 500SC to run my server
Anyways. Wouldn't I have to keep the apache program running at all times and all? Wouldn't that make my game and website laggy?
And what the heck does 400mb2 mean?
sorry about my questions... I'm a bit new to networking and never seem to see the obvious answers...

you dont really need to go out and buy a fancy server, just go build a rig yourself. if you already have a monitor, you could make a decent server for less than 200 bucks. remember, theyre just PCs with a different name(unless you could sparcs or alphas, but thats not my territory)
I run The Rabbit Hole on a Pentium 200 with 96MB of ram. Win2K Pro running Apache plus an SMTP and FTP server. I did 1 Million page views last month no problem. That was about 40GB of transfer.
I''m going to Linux on a 1000Mhz Duron with 512MB of RAM within a week or two just because I have it available and want to use the current computer for development/testing again.
If you program for a high end computer you''re going to get shitty results.
