Planet of Adventure: ripe for a CRPG
Don't you think so? The four books which comprise Planet of Adventure are classics. Even if the exact setting wasn't used, the style and panache of the characters, the seediness of the villains, the mysteries of the alien races, the almost pulpy style of the props, all of it combined would, in my opinion, make for a grand setting for a CRPG.

When you see a Role Playing Game on a Computer, let me know =-)
I''m tired of people calling games with stats and fantasy a role playing game. Sure, TECHNICALLY, any game could be called a role playing game, but if you''ve ever played ''REAL'' role playing games, you just know its not true. There is nothing wrong with a game being a fantasy based combat simulator (I''ve also yet to discover why FPS are action games. They''re combat simulators. Does action not occur in other kinds of games as well? Sure most aren''t very realistic, but very few simulators are right now =-) I wont even consider letting fantasy based combat simulators get by with being called a role playing game until I cant take non-combat stills that actually make a big difference. At least as much difference as the combat skills make, if not more. A good player should be able to be the highest level character in a role playing game without any combat at all. There is much, much more to roleplaying than combat and tactics. Strategy of other kinds is important, such as when and how you say what you say to whomever you say it.

Anyway, if you haven't read Planet of Adventure , you will continue to languish in the pit of cliched RPG projects. Therefore, it would benefit one to pick up a copy for inspiration. Just imagine, a cohort along the lines of Ankhe At Affram Anacho, and a villain along the lines of Aila Woudiver.
Alternatively, one could draw inspiration from The Demon Princes . Just imagine villains like Malagate the Woe...

Has anyone *not* realized that CRPG''s are different from pen-and-paper RPG''s? Anyway...
What is Planet of Adventure? Never heard of it.

I doubt it, hence the futility of arguing over the differences.

Classic sci fi four book series. Great stuff: Planet of Adventure by Jack Vance.

I am tired of people taking genre names so literaly. I think theres an article about the difference between popular genre definitions and true genre definitions.
Mabye its not an RPG by your definition, but when he said that it was a CRPG then we all knew the type of game he was talking about, and that is the only real use for genre names.
Sorry for the OT. Actually I think thats a really good idea! Been a long time though.

This mob blows.
Being a Jack Vance fan I would like to see and play a game based on the Planet of Adventure series. Are you actively thinking of making such a game?

I currently don''t have the time or resources to devote to any type of game, but if I did, it would almost certainly echo the flavor of Planet of Adventure or the Demon Princes.

I''m not sure that ''Servants of the Wankh'' would get past the rather conservative classification type folk here in the UK!
I''d love to see it tho

Such excellent material! Sailing across the ocean in a wooden sailing vessel. The vain aristocracy and the assassin culture of Cath. The constant art of deception. The mysterious Wankh race.
